Return to Australian Climate Variability and ChangeAnnual Mean Cloud Cover

Observations of total cloud amount from a number of stations throughout Australia have been used to examine changes in Australian mean annual cloud cover since 1957. The data used has been adjusted for inconsistent observation practices and also time of observation bias due to the introduction of daylight saving time.

Australian annual mean cloud cover generally shows an increase until the mid-1970s, followed by a weak drop. This decline is consistent with an increased number of El Niño events in recent years.
