Unrelenting Drought for Southern NSW

Summary

• 8th consecutive below average rainfall for NSW overall and also Murray Darling Basin.
• Above average rain in the northeast but continuing dry conditions in the south and southwest of NSW.
• 12th consecutive year with above average maximum temperatures.

Rainfall

In 2008, despite La Niña conditions early in 2008 and neutral El Niño conditions for the remainder, NSW as a whole recorded its 8th consecutive year of below average rainfall for the year. The statewide average for the year was 519 mm which is below the historical average of 566 mm. However this statewide average makes a stark contrast between the northeast of the state and the south and southwest see time series graph of NSW annual rainfall below and map of rainfall deciles.

Coastal areas north of Sydney as well as parts of the Northwest Slopes, Central Tablelands and the Hunter experienced above average rainfall for the year. This was partly due to the La Niña conditions in the Pacific early in 2008 combined with above average rainfall during September and November associated with several frontal systems and an east coast low. However, the southern areas of the state continued to experience generally below average rainfall. Out of the last twelve months, only three (January, November, December) recorded above average rainfall for the state’s south-southwest.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide annual average of 454 mm which is below the historical average of 504 mm. This is the 8th consecutive below average annual rainfall for the MDB.

Temperature

2008 is the 12th consecutive year with above average daytime maximum temperatures for NSW. The annual average maximum temperature for the state was 24.3°C which is above the historical average of 23.9°C. Southern, central and northwestern areas of the state experienced above average maximum temperatures. This is partly associated with clear conditions in the south. The majority of coastal NSW, including parts of the northwest slopes and northern tablelands experienced below average maximum temperatures associated with the increased cloud cover which corresponds with the above average rainfall for the area see time series graph of NSW annual average maximum temperature below and map of maximum temperature anomalies. 

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) also recorded above average daytime maximum temperatures with an annual average of 24.8°C which is above the historical of 24.5°C. This is the 12th consecutive year with above average temperatures for the MDB.

 

New South Wales annual average maximum temperature anomaly 1910 - 2008.

Night time minimum temperatures were slightly below average for the state with a statewide annual average of 10.7°C compared to the historical average of 10.8°C. The northeastern half of NSW, and also the far southwest of the state experienced cooler than average minimum temperatures. The remainder of the state experienced average to above average minimum temperatures .

Some sites had their coldest day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
