Significant Weather Systems

A feature of 2006 was the frequency of intense anticyclones that affected Victoria's weather. When these anticyclones developed well to the south of the continent, they drove some very cold air across the State. By contrast, on other occasions they developed over the Tasman Sea, and drove hot air from the inland across Victoria.

Melbourne Summary

2006 will be remembered for being the 10th consecutive year with below normal rainfall. Both day-time and night-time temperatures averaged slightly above normal, although there were some notable individual extremes - for example, the earliest 30 degree+ day in Spring, the earliest 35 degree+ day in Spring, and the coldest Christmas Day on record.

Included in this summary are a table of State extremes, some new records, and summaries for locations across the State. Visit our maps of rainfall and temperatures for this month.
