Victoria in 2007
Victoria's warmest year on record

Summary

The year 2007 was Victoria's warmest year on record with a mean annual temperature 1.18°C above the long term norm. This is 0.37°C above the previous record, set in 1988.

Only June witnessed cooler than average temperatures during 2007, with record high monthly averages occurring in May and November. Daytime maximum temperatures were between 1 and 2°C above normal in most areas, except in East Gippsland where they were about 0.5°C above normal. Overnight minimum temperatures were also warmer than normal. They were 0.5 to 1.0°C above normal over most of the state, and up to 1.5°C above normal in the far north-east.

Rainfall totals were below average over much of the State, with the exceptions in Gippsland and the West, which received totals near to or above normal.

Rainfall

The year brought very mixed rainfall with swings from wet to dry conditions. The months of August, September and October were particularly dry across the whole of Victoria, while January, June, and November  witnessed significant rain and flooding.

The wettest location in the state was Weeaproinah with 1996.4 mm for the year. The driest overall was Mildura with just 222.4 mm. Mt Wellington recorded the highest daily rainfall for the year 318.8 mm on 28 June. This rainfall occurred during the major flooding event which impacted large areas of Gippsland.

Casterton had its wettest year since 1973.

There is a map of rainfall deciles below.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Thursday 3 January 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from the years 1961 to 1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
