New South Wales in February 2007
El Niño releases it's grip on NSW

Rainfall

February saw an end to the 2006/07 El Niño and a breakdown of the persistent dry conditions across much of eastern NSW. Despite a slightly below average statewide total, most districts experienced close to average rainfall, with above to very much above average rainfall recorded in parts of the the southeast, the central inland and northern inland regions, under the influence of moist easterly airflow and active surface and upper level troughs. The far northeast and parts of the northwestern and far southwestern inland were the only areas of the state to experience below to very much below average rainfall.

The statewide average rainfall for February was 41.6 mm, lower than the historical average1of 50.3 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 28.7 mm compared to the historical average of 40.6 mm.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were above average across most of the state during February. The statewide average maximum temperature was 2.2°C above the historical February average1 of 31.4°C, making it the equal 4th warmest February for statewide maximum temperatures, and the 5th consecutive February with above average statewide maximum temperatures.

February minimum temperatures were also above average across most of the state. The far northeast was the only area of the state with slightly below average minimum temperatures. The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.8°C above the historical average of 17.6°C, making it the 6th warmest February on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.

Other phenomena

Active inland troughs resulted in a record number of thunderstorms across many parts of the state. Canberra Airport recorded 14thunderstorms, 5 more than the previous highest February total of 9, whilst Bathurst Agricultural Station recorded 15thunderstorms, 8 more than the previous highest February total of 7.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 March 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
