New South Wales in March 2007
A warm start to Autumn and better rainfall

Rainfall

With the demise of the 2006/07 El Niño) event in February, March saw a return to close to average rainfall across much of NSW. With the added influence of inland troughs and cold fronts moving through the state, parts of the far west and northeast inland experienced above average rainfall. A small area on the far north coast and in the far northern inland were the only areas of the state to report below average rainfall.

The statewide average rainfall for March was 45.3 mm, lower than the historical average1of 54.2 mm. However, this ranks as the highest March rainfall total since 2001, the year the current extended dry period began in most of NSW. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 34.8 mm compared to the historical average of 43.7 mm. This also ranks as the highest March total since 2001.

Temperature

Autumn began with a continuation of above average temperatures across NSW. The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) was 1.5°C above the historical average of 21.9°C, making it the 4th warmest March on record for statewide average mean temperatures.

Maximum temperatures were above average over much of the state, with a region along the Queensland border, from the north western inland to the far Northern Tablelands, experiencing very much above average maximum temperatures. The statewide average maximum temperature was 1.4°C above the historical March average1 of 28.6°C, making it the 9th warmest March on record for statewide maximum temperatures, and the 9th consecutive month with above average statewide maximum temperatures.

Minimum temperatures were also above average over most of the state. The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.5°C above the historical March average of 15.2°C, making it the 8th warmest March on record for statewide average minimum temperatures, and the 7th consecutive month of above average statewide minimum temperatures.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 2 April 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
