New South Wales in April 2007
Dry start for most of the State, but with some welcome relief

Rainfall

For most of April 2007, much of inland New South Wales received very little or no rainfall. Fortunately a welcome rain band from the west moved through the State from the 26th April, producing much needed rainfall in western New South Wales. This event lifted the April statewide rainfall totals to close to average. Unfortunately, the rain band failed to produce as much rain in the eastern parts of the state. Much of the coastal areas received close to average rainfall however, as a result of several days of persistent moist on-shore flow coupled with upper level cold air. Some very good falls were reported, particularly around the 24th and 25th April, along the central and southern coastal regions. Bellambi recorded the State's wettest day for the month, with 130.6 mm recorded on the 24th.

The statewide average rainfall for April was 31.2 mm, which is lower than the historical average¹of 48.0 mm. Large areas in the western part of the state received above average rainfall, with areas in the north east and parts of the mid north coast recording below average rainfall. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 26.9 mm compared to the historical average of 39.9 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total April rainfall on record.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures during April 2007 were above average for nearly all of New South Wales, with the exception of a narrow strip along the coastal areas. Large parts of the Riverina, Central Tablelands, Southwest Slopes, and along the inland southern and northern border regions recorded above average maximum temperatures of up to 2−3°C. This was mainly as a result of the clear and sunny days experienced during most of the month before the onset of the rain band on the 26th. East of the Divide, maximum temperatures were close to the historical average, with some coastal areas recording 0−1°C below average.

The statewide maximum temperature for April was 25.9°C, which is 1.8°C above the historical average of 24.1°C, and the 6th warmest on record. April 2005 was still considerably warmer, with the mean maximum temperature being 4.1°C above the average.

Minimum temperatures were close to average through much of the state. A large area extending from about Nyngan in the Central West Plains, to Albury in the South West Slopes and also parts of the Upper and Lower Western regions recorded mean minimum temperatures of up to 1−2°C above average.

The statewide minimum temperature for April 2007 was 11.6°C, which is 0.5°C above the historical average of 11.1°C.
