Rainfall

May in New South Wales saw a return to close to average rainfall. The majority of the state totals were as a result of one significant rainfall event, where a cloud band from the west moved through the state between the 16th to 18th May. Some exceptional rainfall totals were recorded in the northwest of NSW, however, these large falls failed to eventuate in the eastern parts of the State, with the coastal areas and the northeast corner of the state being the only parts to receive below average May rainfall. Tibooburra Airport recorded 106.4 mm of rain during May, with 75 mm of that being as a result of the cloud band. Compared to the long term May normal1 (based on Tibooburra Post Office from 1886 to 2006), this is nearly six times what is expected.

The statewide average rainfall for May 2007 was 47.8 mm, which is slightly lower than the historical average2 of 49.2 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 43.0 mm compared to the historical average of 45.0 mm.

Temperature

New South Wales experienced it's warmest May on record. Mean maximum temperatures were above average for the entire state, with large areas, including the southeast and northeast corners, much of the Mid North Coast District and an area from Cobar to the Mungindi, recording the highest mean maximum temperatures on record. The statewide average for mean maximum temperatures was 21.5°C, which is 2.2°C above the historical average of 19.3°C, and above the previous highest May maximum statewide temperature of 21.4°C (set in 2005). Much of the state recorded mean maximum temperatures of 2−3°C above the average for May.

The warm days were generally a result of a sustained series of high pressure systems that moved over the State and the associated lack of cool changes that were experienced. These systems directed consistent warm and dry northwest winds, bringing mostly clear and sunny days.

The mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) was also the highest on record (previous record of 15.4°C, set in 1958). The May 2007 statewide average was 15.5 °C, which is 2.1°C above the historical average of 13.4°C.

Nights were also considerably warmer than what is expected for May. This was particularly evident about the border regions in the South West Slopes District, where nighttime temperatures averaged 3−4°C above what is expected at this time of year. The only part of New South Wales to record below average mean minimum temperatures was the coastal strip extending from about Newcastle to Port Macquarie.

The statewide average for mean minimum temperatures was 9.5°C, which is 2.0°C above the historical average of 7.5°C, and the fourth warmest May on record.

The Murray Darling Basin also experienced similar record warm temperatures. The May 2007 mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) of 16.1°C, exceeded the previous record set back in 1958 by 0.4°C. Similarly, the mean maximum temperature of 22.1°C set a new record, exceeding the previous record set in 2005. The mean minimum temperature of 10.1°C was the second warmest ever recorded, 0.6°C behind the 1989 record (10.7°C).

These warm May temperatures were reflected through much of eastern Australia, with record mean temperatures also recorded in Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

Other phenomena

Snow was reported for the first time for the season on the 20th May. A snow depth of 15.6 cm was measured at the last weekly reading from Spencers Creek (1830 m from Charlottes Pass) on the 24th May.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 June 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Noramals: are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.

2Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation.
