Rainfall

Despite hopes of developing La Niña conditions, NSW experienced below to very much below average rainfall across most regions, with some locations in the southwest experiencing their lowest rainfall on record. The northeast of the state was the only area to experience above to very much above average rainfall, brought about by an active trough that affected the area (and SE Queensland) mid-late month.

The statewide average rainfall for August 2007 was 29.3  mm, which is lower than the historical average1 of 40.6  mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 21.8 mm, compared to the historical average of 40.0  mm.

Some sites had their highest total August rainfall on record.

Temperature

NSW experienced warmer than average daytime and nighttime temperatures during August. Maximum temperatures were above to very much above average throughout, with some locations in the northeast recording their highest maximum temperature on record. The statewide average maximum temperature for August 2007 was 19.7°C, which is 2.6°C above the historical average1 of 17.1°C, making this the 4th warmest August on record for statewide average maximum temperatures (current record for August is 21.2°C, set in 1982).

Much of the state recorded above to very much above average minimum temperatures also. The statewide average minimum temperature was 6.2°C, which is 1.5°C above the historical average of 4.7°C, making this the 4th warmest August on record for statewide average minimum temperatures (current record for August is 19.4°C, set in 1998).

The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) was 13.0°C, which is 2.0°C above the historical average of 11.0°C, making this the 3rd warmest August on record for statewide average mean temperatures (current record for August is 13.1°C, set in 1982).

The warmer than average temperatures experienced in August were a result of higher than average pressure over inland Australia as well as easterly wind anomalies across the state during the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 4 September 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a
ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest)
then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would
be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals
(highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World
Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which
vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for
temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
