Rainfall

Despite conditions in the Pacific Ocean reaching La Niña thresholds, expected rainfall associated with La Niña conditions did not eventuate over NSW. Dry conditions prevailed, with below to very much below average rainfall recorded over the majority of the state, with parts of the central inland and far west recording their lowest rainfall on record, and the Murray Darling Basin recording it's driest September on record. The northeast coast (from the Illawarra to the Northern Rivers) was the only region of the state to record average rainfall - resulting from moist onshore flow early in the month.

This distribution of below average rainfall is, in part, due to the unusual state of the oceans to the north and northwest of Australia. Sea temperatures have been cooling strongly since June when, historically, they would have been expected to warm, as other indicators trended towards La Niña conditions. This pattern inhibits the formation of northwest cloudbands, which is a major source of winter and spring rain for central and eastern Australia during La Niña years. Additionally, NSW experienced easterly wind anomalies over much of the state during September, which favours rainfall along the coast, but not inland areas.

The statewide average rainfall for September 2007 was 8.8 mm, which is lower than the historical average1 of 36.1 mm. This ranks as the 4th driest September on record and marks the driest September in NSW since 1980. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 9.1 mm, compared to the historical average of 35.1 mm, making it the driest September on record for the Murray Darling Basin (previous record was 9.5 mm set in September 1914).

Temperature

NSW experienced close to average maximum temperatures along the coast, and above to very much above average temperatures along the ranges and in the west. This distribution of above average temperatures is a result of easterly wind anomalies across the state, as well as higher than average pressure over NSW during the month. The statewide average maximum temperature was 22.5°C, which is 1.9°C above the historical average1 of 20.6°C, making it the 10th warmest September on record for statewide average maximum temperatures (current record for September is 23.4°C, set in 2000)

Statewide minimum temperatures were generally close to average, however, parts of the far south and far west recorded below to very much below average minimum temperatures. This distribution of below average minimum temperatures is a result of dry condtions and clear skies during the month. The statewide average minimum temperature was 7.2°C, which is 0.1°C above the historical average of 7.1°C.

Some sites had their coldest September day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 2 October 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a
ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest)
then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would
be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals
(highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World
Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which
vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for
temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
