Rainfall

Having experienced below average rainfall for several months, NSW saw the return of above average rainfall in November. Much of the state reported average to above average rainfall, with some locations along the coast and in the west reporting very much above average rainfall.

The statewide average rainfall was 66.8 mm, which is higher than the historical average1 of 45.5 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 63.2 mm, compared to the historical average of 41.1 mm.

The wet November across the state could be a delayed rainfall response to a La Niña event that began in August. A moderate La Niña event is well established in the Pacific, with further intensification evident durng November. Additionally, ocean temperatures immediately to the north and northwest of Australia have been warming, signifiying a decay of the Indian Ocean Dipole, which has been in a positive mode for some time. This would suggest an increased chance of a more typical La Niña rainfall pattern over Australia over the coming months.

As well as the broad scale effects of La Niña, several synoptic scale events also contributed to the rainfall during November. Moist easterly winds were a persistent feature during the month, bringing rainfall to much of the coast. Inland, slow moving troughs, high humidity and frequent upper atmospheric cold pools, brought thunderstorms and heavy rainfall to much of the state.

Temperature

Very warm overnight temperatures were a standout feature for NSW in November. Very high minimum temperatures were reported in the second half of the month, particularly in the south and west of the state. Above to very much above average minimum temperatures were reported statewide, with some locations in the south reporting their highest average minimum temperatures on record.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 15.5°C, which is 2.2°C above the historical average of 13.3°C, making it the 4th warmest November on record for statewide average minimum temperatures (current record for November is 16.1°C, set in 1959) , and the sixth consecutive November with above average minimum temperatures.

There was a distinct maximum temperature gradient across the state in November. In the south and southwest, daytime (maximum) temperatures were above to very much above average, whilst average to below average maximum temperatures were reported across the north of the state. The statewide average maximum temperature was 28.5°C, which is 0.7°C above the historical average1 of 27.8°C (records since 1950), making it the sixth consecutive November with above average maximum temperatures.

The occurrence of above to very much above average maximum and minimum temperatures in the south and west of the state, can, in part, be attributed to a persistent warm northeasterly windflow across the region, particularly from the 12th to the 20th of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 December 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
