Rainfall

NSW experienced its wettest December in 15 years with statewide average December rainfall of 90 mm which far surpassed the historical average¹ of 50.7 mm. It was the wettest December since 1992 when 123.5 mm was recorded across the state. A large region extending from the Upper Western to the Northwest Slopes and Plains received its highest December rainfall on record. Most of the state received above to very much above average rainfall. Only the far southwest of the state experienced below average falls for the month. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 84.4 mm which is well above the historical December average of 46.47 mm.

The above average rainfall in December follows the states wettest November in 7 years. The continued wet conditions across the state are a typical response to the moderate La Niña event which is now well established in the Pacific Ocean. Moist easterly winds were a persistent feature during the month, bringing rainfall to much of the coast. Inland, slow moving troughs, high humidity and upper atmospheric cold pools, brought thunderstorms and heavy rainfall to much of the state. An unseasonably strong cold front brought very heavy falls to inland NSW on the 22nd December with moderate flooding reported around Coonamble.

Temperature

The wet and cloudy conditions across the state during December produced cooler than average days and warmer than average nights during December. The statewide average maximum temperature was 0.6°C below the historical average¹ of 34.2°C. This was the coolest December for maximum temperatures since 1999. With persistent northeasterly winds across the state most of the north and east reported below to very much below average maximum temperatures whilst the far southern border regions experienced above average daytime temperatures.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.1°C above the historical average of 16.1ºC. This is the sixth consecutive December of above average statewide minimum temperatures. Minumum temperatures were above to very much above average across much of the west and south of the state and also in the far northeast.
