Rainfall

In a continuation of the wet conditions that began in November, average to above average rainfall was again recorded across much of NSW in January. The statewide average rainfall was 73.4 mm, which is higher than the historical average1 of 68.0  mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded an average of 69.3 mm, higher than the historical average of 57.4 mm. This is the wettest January since 1996 for NSW and the wettest January since 2004 for the MDB.

Above to very much above average rainfall was recorded along the northeast coastline, from the Hunter to the Northern Rivers, and across a large area of inland NSW, in a band stretching from the northwestern inland to the southwestern inland. Average to above average rainfall was recorded elsewhere in the state, with the exception of a small area in the far northwest, which recorded below to very much below average rainfall.

The continued wet conditions across the state are a typical response to the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean, which is now in it's mature stage. Monsoon low pressure systems that brought flooding to Queensland have also contributed to NSW rainfall this month, particularly in the far northeast and far northern inland.

Some sites had their highest total January rainfall on record.

Temperature

Above average temperatures were recorded across NSW, making it the eighth consecutive January with above average mean temperatures. The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was 25.6°C, which is 0.9°C above the historical average1 of 24.7°C.

Wet and cloudy conditions across the state produced warmer than average nights during January. The statewide average minimum temperature was 19.0°C, which is 1.3°C above the historical average of 17.7°C, and the sixth consecutive January with above average statewide minimum temperatures.

January maximum temperatures were above average across much of NSW, under the influence of warm easterly wind anomalies across the state during the month. Only parts of the northeast recorded below average maximum temperatures, a result of the wet and cloudy conditions in this region. The statewide average maximum temperature was 32.3°C, which is 0.6°C above the historical average of 31.7°C. This is the eighth consecutive January with above average statewide maximum temperatures.

Other phenomena

On the 3rd and 4th January minor to moderate flooding was recorded in parts of the North Coast and Mid North Coast, including Lismore and Bellingen. Major flooding occurred at Murwillumbah and Kyogle.

A trough and associated thunderstorm activity on the 30th brought significant rainfall to parts of western NSW. Cobar Meteorological Office (MO) recorded 101.8 mm of rainfall to 9am on the 31st, which is the highest January daily rainfall total for Cobar MO on record; and the second highest daily rainfall total for any month on record (records since 1962).

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 4 February 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
