Rainfall

The effects of the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean continued to be felt across NSW during February, with average to above average rainfall recorded across much of the state. The far southwest was the only region to record below to very much below average rainfall.

The statewide average rainfall was 69.1 mm, which is higher than the historical average1 of 50.26 mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded an average of 53.6 mm, higher than the historical average of 40.6 mm. This was the wettest February since 2003 for both NSW (February 2003, 80.41 mm) and the MDB (February 2003, 70.05 mm).

The continued wet conditions across the state are a typical response to the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean, the effects of which began to be felt in November 2007. Associated persistent moist easterly wind flow contributed to rainfall along the coast, whilst moist tropical air from Queensland contributed to enhanced rainfall in regions along the NSW/QLD border.

Some sites had their highest total February rainfall on record.

Temperature

February saw a cool end to the 2007/2008 summer, with below to very much below average temperatures recorded throughout much of NSW. The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was 22.5°C, which is 2.0°C below the historical average1 of 24.5°C. This is the 2nd coolest February on record for statewide average mean temperatures (current record is 22.4°C, set in February 1954) .

Persistent easterly wind flow and increased cloud cover contributed to the below average temperatures experienced during February. The statewide average maximum temperature was 28.9°C, which is 2.5°C below the historical average of 31.4°C. This makes it the coolest February since 1976 (28.8°C) for statewide average maximum temperatures, and the 3rd coolest February on record (current record is 28.7°C, set in February 1954)

Overnight (minimum) temperatures were below to very much below average across most of the state, a result of the below average daytime (maximum) temperatures. The statewide average minimum temperature was 16.4°C, which is 1.2°C below the historical average of 17.6°C, which makes it the 7th coolest February on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.

Some sites had their coldest February day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 3 March 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
