A dry, warm start to autumn

Rainfall

A blocking high pressure system in the southern Tasman Sea, and associated ridge, dominated the weather pattern across eastern NSW during March. This system resulted in below to very much below average rainfall across the northeast, far southeast and coastal regions of NSW, and acted as a counter influence to the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean, that has been responsible for above average rainfall across NSW since late 2007. In the western inland, about average rainfall was recorded, the majority of which can be attributed to a low pressure trough that moved through the area late in the month.

The statewide average rainfall was 17.2 mm, which is well below the historical average1 of 54.2  mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded an average of 15.2 mm, well below the historical average of 43.7 mm. This was the driest March since 1998 for both NSW and the MDB.

Some sites had their lowest total March rainfall on record.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were above to very much above average over much of NSW, with highest on record temperatures recorded in the far south/southwest. The far north/northeast and coastal regions were the only areas of the state to record average maximum temperatures. This pattern of above average temperatures can be attributed to the blocking high pressure system that also affected NSW rainfall during March. This system was also responsible for the exceptional and prolonged heatwave that affected much of southern Australia in early March.

The statewide average maximum temperature was 29.9°C, which is 1.3°C above the historical average1 of 28.6°C. This is the 10th warmest march on record (current record is 31.8°C set in March 1986), and the warmest month for NSW since October 2007.

Statewide average mean temperatures were slightly above average during March. The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was 22.1°C, which is 0.2°C above the historical average of 21.9°C.

There was a distinct northeast/southwest divide for minimum temperatures across NSW during March. Under the influence of clear skies and cool onshore winds, below to very much below average minimum temperatures were recorded in the northeast. The lowest minimum temperatures on record were recorded in parts of the Hunter and Mid North Coast. In the southwest, the persistance of exceptionally warm maximum temperatures resulted in average to above average minimum temperatures. Overall, the net affect on the statewide average minimum temperature was a slight reduction. The statewide average minimum temperature was 14.4°C, which is 0.8°C below the historical average of 15.2°C.

Other phenomena

The heatwave that affected much of southern Australia during the first half of March, also impacted parts of the far southwest of NSW. Records broken for the number of consecutive days above 35°C occurred at the following stations:

Broken Hill Airport (1957 - 2008): 13 consecutive days above 35°C, 6th - 18th March (previous record; 8 consecutive days above 35°C in March 1991 & 2004).

Ivanhoe Post Office (1959 - 2008): 17 consecutive days above 35°C, 4th - 20th March (previous record; 8 days in March 1989 & 1983).

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 April 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
