Rainfall

Dry conditions prevailed across much of NSW during April, under the influence of persistent high pressure systems that dominated the state's weather throughout the month. Average to below average rainfall was recorded in most districts, with very much below average rainfall recorded in parts of the central and northwestern inland. However, coastal areas, from the Metropolitan to the Northern Rivers, recorded above to very much above average rainfall - resulting from persistent moist onshore flow throughout the month, and a low pressure system off the north coast late in the month.

The statewide average rainfall was 27.1 mm, which is well below the historical average1 of 48.0  mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded an average of 10.7 mm, well below the historical average of 39.9 mm.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were average to below average throughout the state. Parts of the Central Tablelands and Hunter districts recorded very much below average maximum temperatures, whilst lowest on record maximum temperatures were recorded in parts of the Metropolitan, Illawarra and Mid North Coast. The statewide average maximum temperature was 23.5 °C, which is 0.6 °C below the historical average1 of 24.1 °C.

Statewide minimum temperatures were below average across most districts, with very much below average to lowest on record minimum temperatures recorded in the far north. The statewide average minimum temperature was 9.3 °C, which is 1.8 °C below the historical average of 11.1 °C. This is the seventh coolest April on record for statewide average minimum temperatures (current record is 8.5 °C set in April 1951). This pattern of below average minimum temperatures can be attributed to the persistent high pressure systems, and associated clear skies, that affected the state during April.

Statewide mean temperatures were also below average. The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was 16.4 °C, which is 1.2 °C below the historical average of 17.6 °C. This is the eighth coolest April on record for statewide average mean temperatures (current record is 15.2 °C set in April 1951).

Other phenomena

A vigorous cold front that moved through the state on the 26th/27th brought very cold temperatures to much of NSW, and snow to the Snowy Mountains high ground. Light snowfalls were also reported in Bathurst, Katoomba, Oberon and Orange.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 May 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
