New South Wales in June 2008
Very warm, as dry conditions persist in the south

Summary

  • Above average rainfall in the north and west of the state
  • Below average rainfall in the south, particularly in the southern border districts
  • Southern border districts report third consecutive month of drier than average conditions
  • Sixth warmest June for statewide and MDB maximum temperatures
  • Fourth warmest June for statewide and MDB minimum temperatures
  • Fourth warmest June for statewide and MDB mean temperatures

Rainfall

Much of northern and western NSW reported above average to very much above average rainfall during June.  In contrast, dry conditions continued to affect the southern border regions of the state.  These southern districts have now reported below average rainfall for 3 consecutive months.  Despite the strong north-south gradient of rainfall across NSW during June the statewide average rainfall of 45.0mm was slightly above the historical average1 of 35.9mm.  The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) also reported close to average rainfall, with a basin wide average of 35.8mm, close to the historical average of 30.9mm.

Much of the rain in the north and west of the state fell early in the month when a complex series of upper cold pools and surface troughs affected the state.  One of these systems deepened into an east coast low off the NSW coast from the 4th to the 6th of June bringing heavy rainfall to the northeast of the state.  A northwest cloud band brought widespread and locally heavy rainfall to the north and west of the state on the 9th and 10th of June.

Some sites had their highest total June rainfall on record.

Some sites had their lowest total June rainfall on record.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

Unseasonably warm days and nights prevailed across NSW during June. Persistent high pressure systems over the state in the latter half of the month resulted in light winds and dry conditions. An absence of deep cold southerly bursts during the month contributed to warmer than average days and nights across the state.

Maximum temperatures were above to very much above the historical average throughout the state, with the exception of the far northwest, where average maximum temperatures were reported.  The statewide average maximum temperature was 17.7ºC which is 1.6ºC above the historical average of 16.1ºC.  Following from the sixth warmest May on record, it was also the sixth warmest June on record for statewide average maximum temperatures (current warmest June is 1957 with 19.6ºC). The MDB also recorded its sixth warmest June on record with an average maximum temperature of 18.2ºC which is 1.7ºC above the historical average of 16.5ºC.

Minimum temperatures were also above average to very much above average across the entire state during June.  The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.9ºC above the historical average of 4.6ºC, making it the fourth warmest June on record for minimum temperatures (current warmest June is 1991 with 8.0ºC).  The MDB also recorded its 4th warmest June on record with minimum temperatures 1.9ºC above the historical average of 4.7ºC.

With both maximum and minimum temperatures warmer than average across the state during the month, the mean temperature was fourth warmest on record for the state, at 1.8ºC above the historical average of 10.3ºC.

Some sites had their highest June mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their lowest June temperature on record.

Some sites had their warmest June night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their highest June mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 July 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
