New South Wales in July 2008
Near-normal temperatures, dry west of the Divide

Summary

Rainfall

Close to average rainfall was recorded across much of eastern NSW during July. In contrast, average to below average rainfall was recorded west of the Divide, with below to very much below average rainfall recorded in a band stretching from around Cobar to the northwest corner of the state.

The far northeast of the state was the only region to record above average rainfall, under the influence of an upper level trough early in the month, and a low pressure system (off the SE Queensland coast) late in the month. Onshore south easterly flow during the month was responsible for much of the rainfall east of the divide, whilst a series of cold fronts brought some light rainfall to areas west of the Divide.

The statewide average rainfall was 24.8 mm, which is below the historical average¹ of 38.6 mm, but higher than the July 2007 rainfall total of 17.0 mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 29.9 mm, which is below the historical average of 39.3 mm. This is also higher than the July 2007 rainfall total of 19.9 mm.

Temperature

After an unseasonably warm June, NSW experienced a return to average temperatures in July.

Maximum temperatures were generally close to average throughout the state, with parts of the northern inland recording slightly above average maximum temperatures. The statewide average maximum temperature was 15.8°C, which is 0.5°C above the historical average¹ of 15.3°C. This makes it the warmest July since 2006 (July 2006, 15.9°C; July 2007, 15.6°C ) and the 10th consecutive July with above average maximum temperatures.

Minimum temperatures were close to average throughout the state. However, cloud cover and associated rainfall in the far northeast resulted in slightly above average minimum temperatures in this area. In contrast, a lack of cloud cover and rainfall, with clear skies and dry days, in the far west, resulted in slightly below average minimum temperatures in these areas. The Sydney/Central Coast/Illawarra region also experienced slightly below average minimum temperatures. The statewide average minimum temperature was 3.5°C, which equals the historical average of 3.5°C. This is the warmest July since 2006 for statewide average minimum temperatures (July 2006, 4.3°C; July 2007, 3.2°C).

The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was 9.7°C, which is 0.3°C above the historical average of 9.4°C.

Some sites had their coldest July day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Other phenomena

Snowfall was reported on the Snowy Mountains throughout July, particularly on the 1st and 2nd. Light snowfall was reported at Oberon and Sunny Corner (near Lithgow) in the Central Tablelands, Guyra in the Northern Tablelands and southern parts of the Southern Tablelands, on the 11th July.
