Rainfall

A strong and persistent high pressure system in the Southern Ocean (southwest of Western Australia), dominated the weather pattern over eastern Australia during August, and resulted in average to below average rainfall over much of NSW. The far southeast was the only region to record above average rainfall, associated with a low pressure system that formed off the southeast coast early in the month.

A welcome rain band at the end of the month increased the NSW statewide average rainfall to 20.7 mm, however, this remains below the historical average1 of 40.55  mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) also recorded below average rainfall, with a basin-wide average of 20.3  mm. This is below the historical average of 40.0 mm.

Temperature

NSW experienced unseasonable cold temperatures during August, under the influence of the persistent high pressure system in the Southern Ocean (southwest of Western Australia). It was the second coldest August on record (records since 1950) for overnight minimum temperatures, with a statewide average minimum of 3.2°C, 1.5°C below the historical average1 of 4.7°C. This was the coldest August since 1994 - which remains the coldest August on record (2.9°C).

Maximum temperatures were below average across most of the state, with parts of the far west, Metropolitan, Illawarra and Central Tablelands regions recording very much below average maximum temperatures - the lowest on record in some parts of the Illawarra. The far northeast and far northern inland were the only locations to record about average maximum temperatures. The statewide average maximum temperature was 16.3°C, which is 0.8°C below the historical average1 of 17.1°C. This is the coldest August for maximum temperatures since 1990 (August 1990, 15.53°C).

With both maximum and minimum temperatures cooler than average across the state, the mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was the 5th coldest on record, at 9.8°C, which is 1.1°C below the historical average of 10.9°C. This is the coldest August for mean temperatures since 1989 (August 1989, 9.3°C).

Other phenomena

Snowfall was reported at various locations in the Central and Southern Tablelands, including Orange, Oberon and Batlow, on the 7th. On the 10th, snow was reported in the Southern Tablelands, including Canberra, Goulburn and Yass; and at various locations in the Central Tablelands.

Heavier snowfall was reported on the 11th in the Central Tablelands, including Batlow (up to 20cm deep) & Oberon (up to 10cm deep), causing the closure of the Great Western highway between Lithgow and Bathurst.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 September 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
