A warm start to spring

Summary

Rainfall

There was a strong northeast/southwest gradient of rainfall across NSW during September. Much of the northeastern half of NSW reported above average rainfall, associated with a low pressure system off the far north coast on the 5th and 6th, and frontal systems on the 14th/15th, and 22nd/23rd. In contrast, the southwestern half of NSW recorded average to below average rainfall, particularly the southern border regions of the state.

Despite below average rainfall in the southwest, the overall statewide average rainfall for NSW in September was 40.5 mm, which is slightly above the historical average of 38.6 mm. This is the wettest September for NSW since 2005 (60.4 mm), and higher than September 2007 (9.0 mm).

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 35.9 mm, which is slightly higher than the historical average of 35.1 mm. This is the wettest September since 2005 (49.1 mm) for the MDB and higher than the September 2007 basin-wide average of 9.3 mm.

Temperature

NSW experienced its 11th warmest September on record for day-time (maximum) temperatures. Above average maximum temperatures were recorded throughout the state, particularly in the south, where temperatures were very much above average. This trend was largely a result of higher than average pressure over NSW during the month, whilst warm northerly winds, associated with the high pressure, contributed to the warmer temperatures in the south.

The statewide average maximum temperature was 22.4 °C, which is 1.8 °C above the historical average1 of 20.6 °C (current record for September is 23.6 °C, set in 2000), and close to the maximum temperature recorded for September last year (22.5 °C). This is the 10th consecutive September with above average maximum temperatures for NSW, and the warmest month, for day-time temperatures, since October 2007.

Overnight minimum temperatures were average to above average in the northern half of the state, and average to below average across much of the southern half (largely due to a series of cold fronts that moved through the south mid and late month). However, the overall statewide average minimum temperature was slightly above average at 7.8 °C, which is 0.7 °C above the historical average of 7.1 °C. This is the warmest September for overnight minimum temperatures since 2002 (7.8 °C). 9 out of the last 10 Septembers have recorded above average mean minimum temperatures.

With above average maximum and minimum temperatures, the statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was the10th warmest on record, at 15.1 °C (current record for September is 16.4 °C, set in 1965). This is 1.3 °C above the historical average of 13.8 °C. September 2008 marks the 14th consecutive September with above average mean temperatures in NSW.

Other phenomena

On the 22nd, severe weather associated with a vigorous cold front impacted on many parts of NSW, particularly the Riverina and Far West districts. Hail, heavy rain and winds in excess of 100km/hr were recorded at Broken Hill. A large dust storm also swept across the southwestern region, dumping red soil on the Snowy Mountains.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 October 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
