Rainfall

The southwestern half and the far northeast of NSW reported below to very much below average rainfall in October. Southern border regions of the state have now experienced 3 consecutive Octobers with below average rainfall.

The statewide average rainfall for NSW in October was 28.8 mm, which is below the historical average1 of 48.9 mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 22.8 mm, which is also less than the historical average of 44.1 mm. This is the 3rd consecutive October with below average rainfall in both NSW and the MDB.

Temperature

NSW experienced its equal 4th warmest October on record for day-time (maximum) temperatures, with above to very much above average temperatures recorded across much of the state. The southwestern half of the state was particularly warm, recording very much above average temperatures.

The statewide average maximum temperature for October was 26.9°C, which is 2.5°C above the historical average1 of 24.4°C.

Overnight minimum temperatures were above average in the west of the state, particularly in the northwest, and close to average across the remainder. The overall statewide average minimum temperature for October was 11.5°C, which is 1.0°C above the historical average of 10.5°C. This is the 9th warmest October on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.

With above average maximum and minimum temperatures, the statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was the 8th warmest on record, at 19.3°C. This is 1.8°C above the historical average of 17.5°C.

This is the 5th consecutive October on record for above average maximum, minimum and mean temperatures for NSW.

Other phenomena

Golf ball size hail was reported in the Blue Mountains (Mt Boyce area) with smaller hail at Springwood and Faulconbridge, due to storms on the 20th. Severe thunderstorms associated with a trough of low pressure were reported in the northeast of the state on the 21st of the month. Golf ball sized hail was reported at Crescent Head, Kempsey and Woolgoolga with this event. A cold outbreak on the 22nd brought snowfalls along the higher parts of the tablelands. The Snowy Mountains recieved its only significant snowfall for the month with about 4cm recorded at Perisher Valley. About 2cm of snow fell at Dalgety (Monaro district) and up to 5cm at Mount Lambie between Lithgow and Bathurst in the Central Tablelands. Light snow was reported as far north as Guyra and Walcha on the Northern Tablelands.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9am on Tuesday 4th November 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
