New South Wales in December 2008
Wet in the Southwest

Summary

• Close to average rainfall for NSW as a whole.
• Above average rainfall in the south-southwest of NSW.
• Close to average maximum and minimum temperatures for the state.

Rainfall

With the Pacific ocean near La Niña thresholds, the NSW statewide rainfall average for December was 52 mm, which is close to the historical average of 51 mm. Above average rainfall was recorded in the state’s far west and southwest as well as in the Northern Tablelands, Northwest Slopes and Plains, Central and Southern Tableland. However, there were still some areas that received below average rainfall, namely an area around Cobar, patches in the northeast of the state and an area around Cooma (see link to map below). The majority of the rainfall, particularly in the far west and southwest of the state, resulted from a low pressure system that traversed between 11 – 13th with additional falls due to a cold front that came through on the 29th of the month.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide rainfall average of 51 mm for December, which is slightly above the historical average of 46 mm.

Temperature

The daytime average maximum temperature for the state for December was 30.4°C, which is very close to the historical average of 30.6°C.  Most of NSW particularly in the south recorded below average maximum temperatures, partly due to the cold air associated with a low pressure system and a cold front that occurred during the course of December. Parts of the upper western and the coastal strip from Queensland to and around Jervis Bay experienced above average temperatures (see links to maps below).

Minimum temperatures for December were right on average with a statewide average minimum of 16.1°C. The great majority of the state was within a degree of the average. Only a small area in the upper western , near Lightning Ridge, was more than 1 degree below average.

Some sites had their lowest December mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Other phenomena

A cold front on the 29th of the month caused a major storm to move through NSW with hail reported in various locations in the northeastern parts of NSW. A cold front that passed through southeastern NSW on the 23rd caused a tornado near Cooma which was associated with widespread thunderstorms that occurred between Bombala streching up to Lightning Ridge.
