Rainfall
Sydney had a dry January with well below average rainfall across the whole metropolitan area. Observatory Hill received a total of 24.8 mm, which is only 24% of the historical average of 102.0 mm and the driest since 2003. The rain fell on 8 rain days, the lowest since 1985. Most of January's rain fell on the 27th when a SE airstream converged with a moist easterly stream causing showers and rain periods in coastal Sydney. The wettest suburbs were in the north where Terrey Hills recorded a January total of 70.0 mm. However, most western and southern suburbs recorded less than 30 mm for the month. Blocking high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea contributed towards the below average rainfall. Thunderstorms on the 21st caused heavy showers in northern suburbs with St Ives recording 38.6 mm in about 1 hour.
Well below average rainfall was recorded over the Warragamba Dam catchment area during January with totals around 15 to 25 mm. Sydney's storage level fell slightly during January and is now down to 61% of capacity. Temperatures
Most of Greater Sydney experienced well above average maximum temperatures during January, especially the western suburbs which recorded average maximum temperatures up to 3.5°C above the historic January average. Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum of 27.6 °C, which is 1.7 °C above the historical average of 25.9 °C. This is the highest average maximum temperature for January since 1994 when 28.2°C was recorded and is equal 5th highest on record. It was even hotter in the western suburbs with Penrith recording an average of 33.5°C. Several locations recorded their highest average January maximum temperature on record (see below). Prevailing E-NE winds, only weak southerly changes and predominantly clear skies contributed towards the warm to hot conditions.
Both Penrith and Camden set new records for the number of hot days above 35°C in January. There were 15 days at Penrith when the temperature exceeded 35°C and 10 days above 35°C at Camden. The previous highest at Camden was 9 days in 2001, 1991 and 1979. The highest temperature at Observatory Hill during January was 40.9°C on the 24th while the highest in the Sydney metropolitan area was 43.3°C at Penrith Lakes AWS on the 15th.
Average minimum temperatures in coastal Sydney were above the historic average while western suburbs recorded minimum temperatures very close to the historic average. The official site at Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average minimum of 19.9 °C, which is 1.2°C above the historical average. This is the 9th consecutive January with above average minimum temperatures at Observatory Hill and ranks 15th highest on record for January.
Warm nights were frequent along the coast with Observatory Hill recording 16 nights with minimum temperatures above 20°C, twice the historic average for January. For the first time in the 150 year record, Sydney experienced two consecutive nights with minimum temperatures above 24°C, on the 23rd and 24th with 25.0°C and 24.8°C respectively. The highest minimum temperature in Greater Sydney was a very warm 25.9°C at Prospect Reservoir and at Sydney Olympic Park on the 24th. The Prospect minimum was the highest for January at this site since 1967 and the 2nd highest on record for any month.
The lowest temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill during January was 14.8°C on the 18th while the lowest in the Sydney metropolitan area was 9.6°C at Camden Airport AWS also on the 18th.
Some sites had their highest January mean daily maximum temperature on record.
Wind
Prevailing winds in coastal Sydney were E-NE during January with the occasional southerly change. A significant southerly change on the 24th dropped the temperature 11°C in 2 hours with wind gusts to 69 km/hr. The highest wind gust for the month was 81 km/hr at Sydney Airport on the 15th associated with a low pressure trough, thunderstorm and southerly change.
Other phenomena
The average daily sunshine in Sydney during January was 9.1 hours per day, well above the historic average of 7.5 hours per day. It was the 3rd sunniest January on record in Sydney (records since 1955). There were 2 days of thunderstorms in Sydney during the month, on the 15th and 21st, compared to the historic average of 3 storms. The far western suburbs and lower Blue Mountains recorded 4 days of thunderstorms. The most severe was on the 21st with heavy showers in northern suburbs and 38.6 mm recorded at St Ives in about 1 hour.

percentage of the long-term mean.
