Sydney has a cloudy, mild and wet February
Summary
After a dry January in Sydney, above average rainfall was recorded during February. The cloud and rain kept temperatures close to average during the day and above average at night.

Rainfall
Sydney had a wet February with above average rainfall across much of the metropolitan area. Observatory Hill received a total of 127.6 mm, which is slightly above the historical average of 118 mm. The rain fell on 13 rain days, close to the historical average. Nearly the entire month's rainfall occurred on 6 days in the middle of the month associated with a small east coast low pressure system and moist easterly winds. The wettest suburbs were in the north where St Ives recorded 243.6 mm for the month while the driest suburbs were in the far southwest around Camden. Severe thunderstorms on the 21st caused heavy showers in northern suburbs with Avalon Beach recording 77 mm, most falling in about 2 hours.
Generally below average rainfall was recorded over the Warragamba Dam catchment area during February with totals around 30 to 50 mm in the upper catchment and around 130 mm in the lower catchment. Sydney's storage level remained stationary during February at about 60% of capacity. Temperatures
Sydney experienced mild days along the coast during February with close to average maximum temperatures. Daytime temperatures were several degrees warmer in western suburbs where the cooling influence of the sea breezes were reduced by their inland location. Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 25.7 °C, which is the same as the historical February average. It was several degrees warmer in the western suburbs but still very close to the historic averages. The mild conditions were partly due to the prevailing S-SE winds and cloudy, wet conditions modifying daytime temperatures.
Although heatwave conditions prevailed in the western suburbs early in February, the remainder of the month was mild and cloudy. Richmond set a new record for February recording 4 very hot days over 40°C, the highest at that site since records commenced in 1940. The previous highest was 3 days over 40°C in February 1991, 1987, 1983 and 1940. The hot conditions early in February were part of a statewide heatwave caused by a very hot flow of northerly air over NSW affecting all districts except the coastal fringe.
Average minimum temperatures over the Sydney area were close to the historic average. The official site at Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average minimum of 19.7 °C, which is 0.9°C above the historical average. Twelve out of the last 13 years have recorded above average minimum temperatures in February. Average minimum temperatures over the remainder of the Greater Sydney area were also slightly above average during February.
Warm nights prevailed in the western suburbs early in the month during the heatwave that affected much of NSW. At Penrith, there was a total of 8 warm nights during the month with a minimum temperature above 21°C, well above the normal number of 3 nights over 21°C. Similar conditions were experienced along the coast with Observatory Hill recording 10 nights over 21°C compared to the historic February average of 4 nights over 21°C.
The highest minimum temperature in Greater Sydney was 22.9°C at Sydney Observatory Hill on the 2nd. The lowest temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill during February was 16.4°C on the 13th while the lowest in the Sydney metropolitan area was 12.3°C at Campbelltown on the 28th.
Some sites had their coldest February day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
Wind
Prevailing winds in coastal Sydney during the afternoons were between S and E for 78% of the time during February, which is above the normal frequency from this direction. Strong SE winds on 11th caused wind gusts of 80 km/h at Wattamolla in the Royal National Park, the strongest wind gust in the Sydney region during the month.
Other phenomena
The average daily sunshine in Sydney during February was 6.0 hours per day, well below the historic average of 7.2 hours per day. It was the 6th cloudiest February at the airport site since records commenced in 1978. Although no thunderstorms were reported at the official observing site in the city, 2 storms were reported at the airport site and there were 4 days of storms over the metropolitan area as a whole. The most severe was on 21st February with Avalon Beach in Sydney's north recording 77 mm in about 2 hours. The storm caused flash flooding at Parramatta and Berowra with trees blown over and golf ball size hail reported at Cowan.

decile ranking

average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
