New South Wales in March 2009
Dry and Warm March for NSW

• Above average statewide maximum temperatures.
• Below average statewide rainfall.
• 8th consecutive March with below average rainfall.

• 13th highest March on record for average maximum temperatures.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for March was 30 mm, which is below the historical average of 54 mm. The northern inland, areas in the northwest as well as the central and southern coastal strip of NSW and Riverina recorded below average rainfall. An area in the Lower Western district - particularly west of Ivanhoe including parts of the northern inland as well as a small strip on the North Coast received above average rainfall for the month. The remainder of the state was close to average. The rainfall that fell in the Lower Western district was caused by a thunderstorm which developed due to an inland trough on the 10th of the month. The above average rainfall recorded on the North Coast was caused by a low pressure trough during the last three days of the month.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide average of 19 mm, which is below the historical average of 44 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total March rainfall on record.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature for the state was 29.7°C which is 1.1°C above the historical average of 28.6°C. This is the 6th consecutive March with above average temperatures and the 13th highest on record. All of the state recorded above average maximum temperatures with an area in the northwest of NSW recording up to 3°C above the historical average. The central and southern coast also recorded temperatures 1 - 2°C above the historical average. This is due to the mostly cloudless days experienced in these areas which is consistent with the below average rainfall in these areas.

The average minimum temperature for the state was 15.2°C which equals the historical average. The majority of the state was within a degree of the historical average for over night temperatures. A small area in the far northwest recorded minimum temperatures 1°C above the historical average, with two smaller areas in the northern inland being 1°C below the historical average.

Other phenomena

Above average rainfall between the 29th and 31st of the month caused flooding in areas on the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers with major flooding in Coffs Harbour and Bellingen. This was caused by a low pressure trough which produced the heaviest falls on the last day of the month with the highest 24 hour total recorded at Dorrigo on the 31st at 225 mm.
