Cold Snap Brings Wintry Conditions

• Heavy falls for the Mid North Coast.
• Average to above average rainfall for the majority of the state.
• Above average statewide minimum temperatures.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide rainfall for April was 50 mm, which is very close to the historical average of 48 mm. Above average falls were recorded along most of the NSW coast as well as Southern, Central and North West Slopes, Southern Tablelands, parts of the Riverina and two areas southwest and northwest of the state. An area stretching from Coffs Harbour southwards to the Hunter, including smaller areas in the southwest recorded very much above average rainfall. The remainder of the state was close to average. Major falls were recorded for areas on the Mid North Coast with totals between 400 to 600 mm for April, which was twice to almost three times the monthly historical average for some locations. The above average rainfall that fell - particularly on the Mid North Coast - was caused by two separate events. The heaviest falls were recorded on the 1st of the month, this was caused by a surface and upper level trough and strong, moist onshore winds. The second major falls occurred between the 20th and 23rd of the month due to a low pressure system off the north coast of NSW. On the 14th and 15th of the month a low pressure trough, followed by a cold front, produced rainfall in the southern parts of the state.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide average of 39 mm, which is very close to the historical average of 40 mm.

Temperature

The statewide average maximum temperature was 24.1°C, which equals historical average. Most of the state was within a degree of the historical average with the exception of two small areas, one the south coast and the Hunter, being 2 degrees below average. Temperatures were considerably lower towards the end of the month as a cold front and low pressure system on the 26th of the month brought a cool change, with the cool conditions persisting till the end of the month.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 11.4°C, which is 0.3°C above the historical average. Above average night time temperatures were recorded on the Mid North Coast including parts of the abutting districts. A couple of areas in inland NSW and on the northern borded are also up to 2 degrees above the historical average. The remainder of the state was within a degree of the historical average.

Other phenomena

The Mid North Coast experienced heavy falls on the first of the month causing flooding in many towns within the district namely Coffs Harbour and Bellingen. The area received between 400 and 500 mm on the first of the month. Snow was recorded in the Snowy Mountains caused by a cold front on the 24th. Some locations recording between 20 to 30 cm.
