Rainfall
Following a dry March, above average rainfall was recorded during April over the whole of the Sydney metropolitan area. Observatory Hill received a total of 152.6 mm, which is above the historical average of 126 mm. The rain fell on 16 rain days, which is also above the historical average of 12 days. Much of the metropolitan area recorded rainfall that was 150-200% above the historic average for April with the wettest suburbs in the east. April totals varied from 196.2 mm at Randwick in the eastern suburbs to only 71 mm at Camden Valley in the far southwest.
Most of the month's rainfall occurred during 2 weather events; on the 1st due to a coastal low pressure trough and moist easterly winds, and on the 13th and 14th associated with thunderstorms and strong convective activity. The wettest single day over the metropolitan area was 87.8 mm at Berowra in Sydney's north on the 1st, followed by 83.2 mm at Sydney Airport on the 14th. This was Sydney Airport's wettest April day in 21 years and caused minor flash flooding in low lying areas.
Parts of the lower Warragamba Dam catchment recorded moderate to heavy rain during April, however, the upper catchment received only light falls. April totals ranged from about 150 mm around Lake Burragorang to only 50-60 mm near Goulburn in the upper catchment. Sydney's storage level rose slightly during April and was at 59% of capacity at the end of the month. Temperatures
Sydney experienced mild days during April. Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 22.8 °C, which is 0.4 °C above the historical April average. However, all other locations in the metropolitan area recorded below average maximum temperatures. In the far west they were more than 1 °C below the historic April average. A period of cold, cloudy weather at the end of the month contributed to the below average temperatures.
Generally mild nights were experienced over the Sydney area during April. The average minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 15.7 °C or 1.0 °C above the historic average. Mild nights prevailed over the whole of the metropolitan area with minima about 1 - 1.5 °C above the historic average. At Parramatta, the average minimum temperature of 13.8 °C was equaled in 2005 but not exceeded since 1990. The mild nights were partly due to the lack of any significant cool changes during the month. However, at the end of the month a cold front brought some cooler air to NSW and cold nights in western Sydney. Temperatures fell as low as 3.8 °C at Camden on the 28th.
There was a considerable variation in temperatures over the Sydney region during April, with extremes ranging from a high of 30.1 °C at Sydney Airport on the 15th to a low of 3.8 °C at Camden on the 28th. However, the range in temperature along the coast was smaller; at Observatory Hill the highest temperature was 29.3 °C on the 15th and the lowest was 10.2 °C on the 29th. The coldest day in the metropolitan area was also on the 29th when Springwood recorded a maximum of 15.3 °C and Terrey Hills 16.1 °C. On this day, Camden recorded its lowest maximum temperature on record for April with 16.6 °C.
Some sites had their lowest April maximum temperature on record.
Wind
Prevailing winds in April along coastal Sydney during the afternoons were between E and S for 60% of the time, which is above the normal frequency from this quadrant. The highest wind gust in the Sydney region during the month was 93 km/h from the south at Wattamolla (Royal National Park) on the 19th, associated with a deepening low pressure system in the Tasman Sea. The next highest was 74 km/h from the northwest at Sydney Airport on the 26th caused by a strong cold front.
Other phenomena
Widespread dust on the 16th was blown over Sydney by strong south-westerly winds originating from duststorms in southern NSW. Visibility was reduced to 8 km at times in the central city area. Sydney recorded only one thunderstorm during the month, on the 14th, compared to the historical average of 2 storms for April. The storm on the 14th was most severe in the Bankstown-Liverpool area with falls of up to 33 mm recorded at Glenfield in the southwest. Heavy rain at Sydney Airport (83.2 mm) fell on evening of 13th and was the highest one day fall at that site since 1988. The average daily sunshine in Sydney during April was 6.7 hours per day, slightly below the historic average of 6.9 hours per day.
