New South Wales in May 2009
Warm May: Wet in the Northeast and Dry in the Southwest.

• 9th consecutive May with above average maximum temperatures.
• 9th consecutive May with below average rainfall for NSW and Murray Darling Basin.
• Above average rainfall for the north east and below average for the southwest of NSW.
• Flooding on the north coast of NSW.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for May was 40 mm, which is below the historical average of 49 mm. The northeast of the state including the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers received some of the heaviest falls (up to 600 mm) for the month. The vast majority of the falls occurred between the 19th and 23rd of May, with the heaviest daily totals reported on the 22nd. The heavy falls were caused by an east coast low which formed off the southeast Queensland coast on the 20th. This low pressure system, combined with an upper level low and moist onshore winds, provided ideal conditions for the heavy rain over a large part of the northeast. Parts of the central NSW coast and northern inland also recorded above average falls for the month.

Below average rainfall was recorded for districts along the southern border of the state inlcuding the Riverina, Lower Western and South West Slopes districts. The area of lower than average rainfall extends north through the western slopes to the Central and North West Slopes and Plains districts (see rainfall deciles map below). Some areas in the northern inland and along the south coast also reported below average rainfall. The dry conditions were due to a dominant slow moving high pressure systems south of the continent which blocked rain bearing fronts making this the 9th consecutive May with below average rainfall.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide average of 26 mm, which is below the historical average of 44 mm.

Temperature

The statewide average maximum temperature was 20.3°C , which is 1°C above the historical average. A large area of the state's inland, stretching from the southern border, was up to 2 degrees above average. The remainder of the state was within one degree of the historical average. On the north coast maximum temperatures were up to one degree below the average due to increased cloud cover. The warm conditions were due to a dominant high pressure system south of the continent which was ridging through the south of NSW. This marks the 9th consecutive May with above average maximum temperatures.

The statewide average minimum temperature was equal to the historical average of 7.5°C. The vast majority of the state was within a degree of the average. Only one very small area within the Upper Western district was below average by up to 2°C. Cooler night time conditions were partly due to the high pressure and overall clear conditions.

Some sites had their lowest May mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Other phenomena

The heavy falls between the 19th and 23rd of the month caused flooding at many locations on the north coast, including Grafton and Kempsey. Smaller low pressure systems impacted the north coast during this event causing additional severe weather including a gust at Cape Byron of 133 km/h.
