Warm June nights

  • 6th warmest June on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.
  • 8th warmest June on record for statewide average mean temperatures.
  • Slightly above average statewide maximum temperatures.
  • Above average rainfall in the far northeast and central inland parts of the state.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for June was 50.0 mm, which is above the historical average1 of 35.4 mm. The central and northeast areas of the state received the majority of rainfall, under the influence of low pressure troughs that affected these areas early in the month (1st / 2nd), and later in the month (21st / 22nd). Elsewhere in the state, close to average rainfall was recorded in most districts.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 46.1 mm during June, above the historical average of 30.3 mm.

Despite the above average rainfall in parts of NSW it is important to note the recent trend toward the development of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. El Niño events are usually (but not always) associated with below normal rainfall in the second half of the year across large parts of southern and inland eastern Australia. Temperature

NSW recorded it's 6th warmest June on record for statewide average minimum temperatures. Above average minimum temperatures were recorded throughout the state, particularly in the southern and central inland, where minimums were 2 −3°C above average. The warm night-time conditions were due, in part, to increased humidity and cloud cover across NSW during the month. The overall statewide average minimum temperature was 6.4°C , which is 1.8°C above the historical average1 of 4.6°C (current record is 8.0°C set in June 1991).

The statewide average mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and minimum temperature) was the 8th warmest on record, at 11.5°C (current record is 13.0°C set in June 1991). This is 1.2°C above the historical average of 10.3°C.

Maximum temperatures were close to average with much of the state recording maximum temperatures within one degree of the historical average. Small areas in the northwest and northeast recorded temperatures between 1 - 2°C above average. The statewide average maximum temperatures was 16.7°C , which is 0.6°C above the historical average of 16.1°C .

Some sites had their coldest June day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 July 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
