Rainfall

The Sydney Metropolitan Area recorded close to average rainfall during June. Observatory Hill recorded a total of 129.8 mm, which is close to the historical average of 130.6 mm. The rain fell on a total of 14 days, which is above the historical average of 11 days. The wettest suburbs were along the coastal fringe and on the North Shore while the driest were in the far west. The highest June total was 145.4 mm recorded at Mona Vale Golf Club, while the lowest total of 24 mm was recorded at St Clair (Juba Close).

The majority of the month's rainfall fell in two main events. The first occured on the 3rd and 4th of June, when a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea produced moist onshore flows bringing coastal rain. The second event occured between the 17th and 22nd of June and again was caused by a high pressure system in the Tasman. A trough was also present just off shore during this time, bringing moderate rain to the coastal fringe.

Light rain over the catchment saw Sydney's storage levels rise slightly from 61% at the end of May, to 61.4% at the end of June. Recent rainfall and current levels in Sydney's water catchments can be found on the Sydney Catchment Authority web site http://www.sca.nsw.gov.au/dams/rainfall.html

Temperature

The Sydney Metropolitan area experienced close to average maximum temperature conditions over June. Coastal areas experienced slightly higher than average maximum temperatures, with Sydney Observatory Hill recording an average maximum temperature of 17.8°C, slightly above it's long-term June average of 16.9°C. June weather was dominated by high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea and coastal troughs.

Mild nights were also experienced across the Sydney Metropolitan area during June. The average minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 10.3°C or 1.0°C above the historic average. Conditions in the west were similarly mild, with minimum temperatures at Camden airport averaging 5.6°C, which is 1.2°C above the historical average. Warm onshore flows throughout the month caused slightly above average humidity and increased cloudiness, which led to warmer than average nights across the Sydney Basin.

There was a considerable variation in temperatures over the Sydney region during June, with extremes ranging from a high of 21.4°C at Sydney Airport on the 29th to a low of −2.4°C at Richmond RAAF on the 11th.

Wind

Westerly winds prevailed in coastal Sydney on 78% of mornings, however no dominant wind direction was evident during the afternoon, with easterlies and westerlies both occuring at approximately the same frequency (23% and 27% respectively). The strongest wind gust was 67km/h at Camden Airport on the 10th, coinciding with a period of relatively stong onshore flows.

Other phenomena

No thunderstorms were recorded in Sydney during June, however a number of storms were recorded off the coast during this month. A waterspout was reported off the coast to the south of Sydney on the 2nd of June. The average daily sunshine in Sydney during June was 5.2 hours per day, which is slightly below the historic average of 5.6 hours per day. The amount of cloud cover over Sydney was slightly above average, with the average 9am observation recording 4.8 oktas, compared to the long-term average of 4 oktas.
