Warm and dry in NSW

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for July was 21 mm which is below the historical average¹ of 38 mm. This is the third consecutive July with below average rainfall for NSW. The highest rainfall recorded was in an area south of Canberra, including the Snowy Mountains, where falls of up to 300 mm were recorded. This was the only area in NSW to record above average rainfall for the month and was caused by the passage of cold fronts on the 1st and 23rd of the month.

Rainfall was below average for large parts of inland NSW particularly for the Northern and Central Slopes and Tablelands districts, the Riverina and south coast. The lowest rainfall recorded was in the far north west of the state where no rainfall was recorded during July which has resulted in very much below average rainfall for the area.

The Murray darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 22 mm, which is below the historical average¹ of 39 mm. This is the 3rd consecutive July with below average rainfall for the MDB.

Temperature

The statewide average maximum temperature was 16.2°C which is 0.9°C above the historical average¹ of 15.3°C. The vast majority of the state recorded above average maximum temperatures making this the 11th consecutive July with above average maximum temperatures. Above average temperatures, of up to 2°C above the historical average, were recorded in the north and south corners of the western border of the state including the south coast and an area in the northern inland. This was due to clear sky conditions in these areas. The warm conditions across NSW are associated with the passage of a series of high pressure systems and an above average high pressure anomaly (particularly in the northern parts of the state). The only area to record below average temperatures was in the northern inland.

The average minimum temperature for the state was 4.6°C which is 1.08°C above the historical average¹. A large part of the state was up to 2°C above the average, stretching from the northwest through most of inland and southern NSW. This was due to westerly flow associated with a series of high pressure systems which traversed over the state during July.

Some sites had their highest July temperature on record.

Other phenomena

Heavy snow falls were recorded in the Snowy Mountains on the 1st and 23rd of the month. These falls were caused by the passage of cold fronts.
