Warm, sunny July for Sydney

Rainfall

Close to average rainfall was recorded across the Sydney Metropolitan area during July. Observatory Hill recorded at total of 53 mm, which is close to the historical July average of 56.3 mm. There were 9 rain days during July, which is very close to the average of 8.5 rain days. The wettest suburbs were in coastal Sydney where Randwick recorded 75.2 mm for the month. Western Sydney experienced a relatively dry July, with Richmond RAAF recording a total of 16.6 mm of rainfall, which is well below the historical average of 31.7 mm.

The majority of the month's rainfall fell in three main events. The first occured between the 8th and 11th July, when a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea produced moist onshore flows bringing coastal rain. The second event occured around the 17th July, again caused by a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea. The third event occured around the 27th July, triggered by a low pressure trough off the east coast of NSW, which brought rainfall to the western Sydney area.

The catchment recieved only minor rainfall during July, causing storage levels to drop slightly from 61.4% at the end of June, to 60.7% at the end of July. Temperature

The Sydney Metropolitan area experienced slightly above average maximum temperature conditions over July. Observatory Hill recorded an above average maximum temperature of 18.3°C, which is 2.0°C above the historical July average. Camden Airport recorded it's highest ever July temperature on the 22nd, reaching 25.4°C, beating the previous record set in 1975 by 0.1°C. July weather was dominated by high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea and the passage of a number of fronts.

Mild nights were experienced in coastal Sydney, while close to average minimum temperatures were recorded in Sydney's west. The average minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 9.2°C, or 1.2°C above the historical average. Average minimum temperatures in western Sydney were close to the historical average, with Camden Airport recording a July average minimum temperature of 3.2°C, which is only 0.3°C above the historical average. Warm onshore flows throughout the month led to warmer than average nights in coastal Sydney.

There was a considerable variation in temperatures over the Sydney region during July, with extremes ranging from a high of 26.7°C at Penrith Lakes on the 22nd to a low of −1.8°C at Camden Airport on the 25th.

Some sites had their highest July temperature on record.

Wind

Westerly winds prevailed in coastal Sydney on 83% of mornings and 36% of afternoons. The strongest wind gust was 72km/h at Bankstown Airport on the 3rd, coinciding with a low pressure trough off the coast of NSW on this day.

Other phenomena

Sydney Airport recorded above average sunshine hours, averaging 7.3 hours per day, well above the historical average of 6.6 hours. Cloudiness during July was also below average, with Sydney Airport recording an average of 2.9 oktas, compared to the long-term average of 3.2 oktas. No fog or frost events were recorded at Observatory Hill during July. Strong wind was recorded in Sydney on the 3rd, however no thunderstorms were reported over land during July.
