An archive of previous monthly summaries for Sydney - Greater Sydney is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

Rainfall

Very dry conditions prevailed throughout Sydney during August. Observatory Hill had a total of only 6.0 mm, which is well below the historical August average of 81.2 mm. This is the equal 7th driest August recorded at Observatory Hill in the 150 year record. The rain fell on just three days, the 12th, 25th and 30th, which is equal 3rd lowest number of rain days on record for August. Much of the metropolitan area recorded rainfall totals of less than 10 mm for the month, the highest was at Turramurra with 12.6 mm. The lowest total was only 1.0 mm at Willmot in the western suburbs.

The lack of any significant rainfall was mainly due to prevailing dry W-NW winds throughout the month with very few rain bearing systems. At some sites the prevailing W-NW wind occurred between 80-90% of the time, minimising the chance of any significant rain.

Dry conditions also prevailed over the Warragamba Dam catchment. The lower catchment received around 10 mm during August while the upper catchment recorded up to 30 mm (near Goulburn). The dry weather caused Sydney's storage level to fall by 1% during August and is currently around 59% of capacity. Recent rainfall and current levels in Sydney's water catchments can be found on the Sydney Catchment Authority web site http://www.sca.nsw.gov.au/dams/rainfall.html

Temperatures

Sydney metropolitan area experienced warm days during August. Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 20.9 °C, which is a significant 3.1 °C above the historical August average. This is Sydney's 2nd warmest August in the 150 years of record. The warmest August was in 1995 (average max 21.3 °C). Both Sydney Airport and Riverview Observatory recorded their warmest August on record with respect to their average maximum temperature.

Observatory Hill recorded 18 warm days (maximum temperature greater than 20 °C) during the month, the highest ever recorded in August. Previous highest was 16 days in August 1936. Normally August would experience 6 days over 20 °C. Plentiful sunshine, prevailing NW-W winds and the lack of any significant cool changes contributed towards the warm conditions.

Mild nights were also experienced in coastal Sydney during August. The average minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 10.4 °C or 1.4 °C above the historic average. However, over the remainder of the Sydney region, especially locations away from the coast, minimum temperatures were close to average and in some cases in the far west, they were below average.

There was a considerable variation in temperatures over the Sydney region during August, with extremes ranging from a high of 27.3 °C at Penrith Lakes AWS on the 21st to a low of -2.8 °C at Camden Airport on the 9th. There was a smaller range in temperatures along the coast; at Observatory Hill the highest temperature was 25.7 °C on the 19th and the lowest was 5.9 °C on the 9th.

Some sites had their highest August mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Some sites had their warmest August night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Wind

W-NW winds prevailed over Sydney during August with the occasional weak afternoon sea breeze. More than 87% of morning winds were between SW and NW with 47% of afternoon winds between N and W. Strong westerly winds prevailed during the last week of the month with numerous wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h. The highest was 89km/h at Camden Airport on the 25th, with 87 km/h at Holsworthy and at Sydney Airport on the same day.

Other phenomena

The only thunderstorm in Sydney during August was on the 11th, occurring mainly over the eastern suburbs. Brief heavy rain was reported but the highest 24 hr total (to 9am 12th) was only 10.2 mm at Turramurra on the North Shore.

Daily rainfall

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).
This table is very wide; you may have to scroll sideways to see all the days, and you may need to set the paper to 'landscape' to print.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 September 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
