New South Wales in September 2009
Warm start to spring

• Warm daytime and night time temperatures.
• Below average rainfall for NSW and Murray Darling Basin overall.
• Extensive dust storms reported across NSW.
• 11th warmest September on record for average maximum temperatures.
• 10th warmest on record for average mean temperatures.
• 11th consecutive September with above average maximum temperatures.
• 5th consecutive September with above average minimum temperatures.
• 15th consecutive September with above average mean temperatures.

Rainfall

The statewide average rainfall fo NSW was 24.2 mm which is below the historical average of 35.7 mm. A cold front and trough resulted in scattered falls on the 4th which contracted to the northeast on the 5th of the month. On the 22nd a pre frontal trough produced some falls along the southern border. This was followed by a strong cold front which produced patchy falls in the southern and eastern parts of the state. Rainfall associated with frontal systems that passed across the state was patchy and mostly limited to the far southern regions. The resulting rainfall decile map shows parts of NSW receiving above average or below average falls. The majority of the NSW coast was below average.

The Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin wide average of 28.4 mm which is below the historical average of 34.6 mm.

Temperature

NSW statewide average maximum temperature was 22.5°C which is1.9°C above the historical average of 20.6°C. The warmest conditions throughout September were recorded in the northeastern and inland NSW where temperatures were up to 3°C above average. The rest of the state recorded temperatures up to 2°C above average. Dry conditions resulted in dominantly clear skies which allowed for greater heating during the day. Frontal systems that traversed over the state pulled down very warm air from the centre of the continent further contributing to the above average temperatures. The warmest anomalies were associated with the passage of a front and trough on 12th and 13th of the month which directed very warm northwesterly air over much of the state with temperatures up to 12°C above average. Similar synoptic situations occured on or around the 3rd, 15th, 17th, 20th, and 25th.

The average minimum temperature during September was 7.8°C which is 0.7°C above the historical average of 7.1°C. Most of the state was up to 1°C above the average with some areas up to 2°C above the historical average namely, south and central coast areas as well as the northwest. Frontal systems which brought windy conditions with very warm air from the northwest resulting in the above average minimums.

An El Niño event is currently maturing in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.  These events are usually (but not always) associated with above average temperatures in eastern Australia. Very high temperatures experienced throughout August and September are likely due to the current influence of El Niño combined with the background, long-term warming that has been observed across Australia since the start of last century.

Other phenomena

NSW experienced two large and extensive dust storms. The more extreme occurred on the 23rd of the month resulting in reduced visibility at many locations. On the morning of the 23rd visibility in Sydney was reduced to 400 metres over much of the city. A thick layer of red dust coated all exposed surfaces with many flights delayed or cancelled at Sydney Airport. The dust, originated from South Australia and western NSW, and traversed across the state affecting areas as far north as Cairns. A few days later, strong winds again caused raised dust on the 25th reducing visibility to 800 m at 3 pm at Broken Hill with the dust extending to Sydney by the morning of the 26th.
