The statewide average rainfall for NSW was 35.1 mm which is below the historical average1 of 47.8 mm. Most of the rainfall was constrained to coastal areas with warm sea surface temperatures and onshore winds providing moisture which produced falls throughout the month. The heaviest falls for the month were recorded on the 27th October in the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast districts. The highest 24 hour rainfall total of 409 mm was recorded at a flood warning gauge in Bellingen (Crystal Creek). This is just 0.4 mm short of the record for highest daily rainfall total for October for all of NSW. Many surrounding locations recorded daily totals of 300 to 400 mm which resulted in moderate flooding at some locations in the Mid North Coast. Most of inland NSW, particularly the south, received below average falls associated with generally dry conditions. The coastal rainfall received during the first half of the month is partly due to the shift from negative to positive Southern Annular Mode (SAM) which results in change from westerly to easterly dominated wind regime. To find out more about SAM please visit our climate influences website.
The Murray Darling recorded a basin wide average of 26.8 mm which is below the historical average1 of 43.2 mm.

NSW statewide average maximum temperature was 25.2°C which is 0.7°C above the historical average1 of 24.4°C. The first half of October was dominated by cooler than normal conditions. This was partly due to the location of high pressure systems south of NSW which directed south to southeasterly airflow across most of the state bringing cooler air from the Southern Ocean. The second half of the month was significantly warmer with the highest temperatures recorded on the 31st with areas in the southwest recording temperatures up to 12°C above average. These warmer conditions were partly associated with the passage of fronts and troughs which directed warmer northwesterly airflow across the state.
The average minimum temperature during October was 10.3°C which is 0.2°C below the historical average1 of 10.5°C. Minimum temperatures were generally below average for the first two thirds of the month. This was partly due to the clear sky conditions as well as cool southerly airflow in the first half of the month. The last 10 days of the month were distinctly warmer with the warmest night time temperatures recorded on the 30th and 31st of the month with some areas in the southwest recording up to 12°C above the historical average1.
Some sites had their coldest October day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Some raised dust was recorded in the Riverina on the 2nd of the month which was associated with a cold front and trough. Thunderstorms with hail were recorded in the Sydney area (pea-sized) and Grafton (20 cent coin size) on the 5th. A low pressure trough and cool southerly airstream resulted in snowfalls of up to 12 cm in Bombala, Jindabyne and Cooma on the 7th of the month.
Several fires in the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast districts were burning during October. The heavy falls recorded on the 27th and the following days provided much needed relief and extinguished most of the fires that were burning in the area. These heavy falls also resulted in moderate flooding on the Mid North Coast namely at Bellingen, Nambucca and Orara.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 November 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
