Weather pattern abruptly changes: Cool and wet in Sydney during October

Rainfall

Following nearly 3 months of dry weather in the Sydney region, the patterns abruptly changed early in the month with above average rainfall recorded in Sydney during October. Observatory Hill had a total rainfall of 180.0 mm, which is well above the historical October average rainfall of 77.6 mm. This falls in the wettest 10% of all October totals at Observatory Hill. The wettest October was 285 mm in 1985. The rain fell on 14 days, which is above the average of 12 rain days. Except for the far west and southwest, the entire metropolitan area recorded above average rainfall. The heaviest rain was along the coast, North Shore and Inner West where thunderstorms were most active. Monthly totals ranged from 223.5 mm at Castle Cove on the North Shore to a low of 42 mm at Rossmore (South Creek) in Sydney's west.

Thunderstorms on the 25th caused very heavy rain and flash flooding in parts of the inner west and North Shore, disrupting traffic and causing power outages. The highest 24 hour fall was 114 mm at Frenchs Forest, the wettest day in October at this location since 1960. Observatory's Hills total of 73.2 mm was the wettest October day since 1987. Other heavy falls included 112 mm at Castle Cove and 96 mm at Canterbury Racecourse.

The main cause of the October rain were moist SE airstreams directed onto the NSW coast by high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea and low pressure troughs over northern NSW. The most active system was on the 25th and 26th when a surface trough combined with an upper level trough enhancing instability and causing thunderstorms and heavy rain in parts of Sydney.

However, the coastal rain failed to penetrate inland with much of the Warragamba Dam catchment recording below average rainfall; October totals ranged from 50−80 mm over the entire catchment. Sydney's storage level fell by 1% during October and is currently around 57% of capacity. Some sites had their highest October daily rainfall on record.

Temperatures

In a sharp contrast to last month, cool conditions were experienced in Sydney during October with below average maximum temperatures. In a reversal of the usual pattern, October was nearly 2°C cooler than September. The average maximum temperature during October was 21.4° which is 0.7°C below the historic average and the coolest since 1992 (when 21.1°C). At Parramatta the average maximum of 22.3°C was the lowest October average maximum since 2003.

There were several cold, rainy days with strong southerly winds, including the 3rd with a maximum of only 15.2°C at Observatory Hill and 13.1°C at Terrey Hills, the coldest in the Metropolitan area for the month. At Observatory Hill, there were 5 days when the maximum temperature was below 18°C, the highest number for October since 1990 (when also 5 days).

Cloudy, rainy weather with lengthy periods of cold southerly winds contributed towards the below average daytime temperatures.

Sydney's nights were cool to mild and within about 0.5°C of the historical average minimum throughout the metropolitan area. The average minimum at Observatory Hill was 14.1°C which is 0.6°C above the historic average. However, minimums in western suburbs, although a few degrees cooler than coastal suburbs, were very close to the historic October average.

There was significant variation in temperatures over the Sydney region during October, with extremes ranging from a high of 36.4°C at Penrith on the 21st to a low of 4.5°C at Badgerys Creek AWS on the 7th. There was also significant diurnal variation with a range of 10°C to 36°C at Penrith on the 21st.

Wind

Except for a few days of westerly winds in the middle of October, prevailing winds were generally onshore and varied mostly between NE and S. The strongest winds were on the 14th due to a cold front and reached 91 km/hr from the WNW at Sydney Airport and 83 km/hr at Penrith Lakes in western Sydney. In the Greater Sydney region, a wind gust of 117 km/hr was recorded at Wattamolla (Royal National Park) south of Sydney on the 8th due to an east coast low pressure system.

Other phenomena

Thunderstorms were recorded in Sydney on 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 25th. Some western suburbs reported small hail on the 5th and 6th. Very heavy rain on the 25th associated with slow moving thunderstorms caused flash flooding in parts of the inner west and North Shore. Several buildings were water damaged in Chatswood. Flooding in the Royal National Park, closed Audley Weir and stranded many vehicles while Bexley Road was closed at Earlwood due to flooding of Wolli Creek. Canterbury Racecourse AWS recorded 51.2 mm in the 47 minutes to 12.35pm. Peakhurst recorded 67 mm in the 24 hours, the wettest October day on record at this location. The highest 24 hour rainfall (to 9am 26th) was 114 mm at Frenchs Forest.

October was a cloudy month with an average of 6.8 hours of sunshine per day, the lowest since 1999 and the 4th cloudiest on record. Normal sunshine for October is 7.9 hours per day. From the 2nd to the 4th, only half an hour of sunshine was recorded at Sydney Airport in the 3 days.

The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
