New South Wales in December 2009: Wet end to 2009

Rainfall

Statewide average rainfall for December was 70.6 mm which is above the historical average1 of 50.9 mm. Most of December was dry with small areas recording some localised falls due to thunderstorms. The majority of rainfall recorded across the state fell in the last week of the month. Widespread rainfall across NSW fell late on Christmas Day and conitnued on through till the end of 2009. This was due to an inland low pressure system associated with the ex-tropical cyclone Laurence. The heaviest falls were recorded in the Hastings River catchment, with Kindee Bridge (Hastings River) recording a 24 hour total of 173 mm on the 27th of the December. Moist onshore winds and a low pressure trough contributed to more falls particularly for northeast NSW during the last 3 days of 2009. This resulted in major flooding of several northern inland rivers namely, Castlereagh, Darling (Bourke, Louth and Tilpa), and Namoi Rivers.

The Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin wide average of 61.3 mm, which is above the historical average1 of 45.9 mm.

Temperature

Average maximum temperature for the state was 31.9°C which is 1.4°C above the historical average1 of 30.5°C. The warm conditions were partly due to warm northerly winds ahead of several low pressure troughs which traversed across NSW. Western and northeastern NSW recorded maximum temperatures up to 2°C above average with parts of the North West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes and Southern Tablelands Districts recording up to 3°C above average. December is the eleventh month this year with above average maximum temperatures, only April with an anomaly of only -0.03°C was cooler than average.

The average minimum temperature for the state was 17.0°C which is 0.9°C above the historical averge1 of 16.1°C. All of NSW recorded above average minimum temperatures with most of northeast, central and far southwest NSW recording up to 2°C above the December average. December is the nineth month this year with above average minimum temperatures.

Other phenomena

At the start of December over 100 fires were burning across the eastern half of NSW. Dry thunderstorms ignited fires in inaccessible bushland and warm, dry and windy conditions have made these and other fires difficult to contain. Widespread rainfall across NSW which began late on Christmas Day and continued through till the end of 2009 extinguished the fires and resulted in flooding in northern inland areas such as Coonamble, Dubbo, Gilgandra and Macquarie region amongst others.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 4 January 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
