Rainfall

Statewide average rainfall for January was 38.8 mm which is below the historical average of 67.3 mm. Extensive falls in northern parts of NSW at the start of the month resulted in flooding in the northern inland of NSW (please see phenomena section below). This resulted in large parts of northern inland NSW recording above average falls for January. Following a wet start to the year, January was a predominantly dry month. Throughout the remainder of January some falls were recorded along eastern NSW associated with low pressure troughs and onshore flow. The Northern Rivers, and a broad band extending from NW to SE NSW recorded below average falls.

The Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin wide average of 35.4 mm which is below the historical average of 56.3 mm.

Temperature

The first month of 2010 is ranked as the 10th warmest January on record and the 10th consecutive January with above average temperatures. The average mean temperature for NSW was 26.3°C which is 1.6°C above the historical average1 of 24.7°C. The warm temperatures were due to the passage of several high pressure systems across the continent. Several low pressure troughs and two cold fronts traversed over NSW and resulted in warm, dry conditions ahead of the troughs with cool conditions behind occurring on the 12th-13th, 17th-19th and 23rd-24th of the month. These events resulted in temperature records being broken at some site in NSW (see record tables below).

Maximum temperature

Average maximum temperature for the state was 33.8°C which is 2.1°C above the historical average1 of 31.7°C. Most of NSW was up to 3°C above average with an area in the southwest recording temperatures up to 5°C above average. This is the 10th warmest January on record and the 10th consecutive January with above average maximum temperatures.

Minimum temperature

The average minimum temperature for the state was 18.8°C which is 1.1°C above the historical averge1 of 17.7°C. Most of NSW recorded above average minimum temperatures with an area in the southwest recording temperatures up to 3°C above average. This is the 8th consecutive January with above average minimum temperatures.

Other phenomena

Widespread rainfall across NSW which began late on Christmas Day and continued through till early January resulted in flooding in northern inland areas such as Coonamble, Dubbo, Gilgandra and Macquarie region amongst others.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 February 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
