Rainfall

Statewide average rainfall for February was 106.5 mm which is above the historical average1 of 50.6 mm and is the highest rainfall since February 1976 when 151.9 mm were recorded statewide. The above average rainfall was due to two significant rainfall events in the first half of February. The first major rainfall event was associated with ex-tropical cyclone Olga, which produced falls across the north western parts of New South Wales in early February. Following this, on the 13th - 14th of February an upper level low and a surface low pressure trough extending from northwest to southeast NSW interacted with the high humidity present across the state and produced major falls. This resulted in many locations under the trough line recording four times their February rainfall. Areas in the far west and southeast of the state, namely Central Darling and Bega areas experienced major flooding due to the heavy falls. The resulting rainfall deciles map shows extensive areas with above average falls, particularly in the northwest, central and southeast of the state. Recent rainfall over eastern Australia appears fairly typical of past El Niño breakdowns. January 2007 (mainly SA/western Vic), February 2003, April 1998, January 1995, March 1983 and February 1973 all produced good rainfalls on the back of an El Niño event. This has been the 10th wettest February on record.

The Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin wide average of 93.5 mm which is above the historical average1 of 40.4 mm and is the 10th wettest February on record.

Temperature

The statewide average mean temperature for NSW was 24.9°C which is 0.4°C above the historical average1 of 24.5°C. The above average mean temperature was strongly influenced by the above average minimum temperatures. Warm nights during February associated with overcast conditions and high humidity with the rain that fell particularly during the first part of the month. The cloudy conditions, contributed to above average minimums, also resulted in below average maximum temperatures.

Maximum temperature

The statewide average maximum temperature for February was 30.7°C which is 0.7°C below the historical average of 31.4°C. Most of the state recorded below average maximum temperature. The far northwest of NSW recorded temperatures up to 5°C below average with the the surrounding areas recording maximum temperatures which graded down to 2°C below average for the eastern parts of the Upper Western and the northern parts of the Lower Western districts. Coastal areas as well as the far southwest of the state were the only areas to record above average temperatures with the Mid North Coast, recording average maximum temperatures up to 2°C above average.

Minimum temperature

The statewide average minimum temperature for February was 19°C, which is 1.4°C above the historical average of 17.6°C. Most of NSW recorded above average minimum temperatures with most of the southern border of the state recording the highest anomalies of up to 3°C above average with some areas in the southwest recording temperatures up to 4°C above average.

Other phenomena

Heavy rainfall that fell during early to mid February caused major flooding in the southeast and far west NSW. Emergency services minister, Steve Whan announced a natural disaster declaration for the Bega and Eurobodalla local government areas in the state's southeast as well as for the Central Darling and Cobar Shire's in the state's far west.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Monday 1 March 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
