It was a wet start to autumn for NSW and the Murray Darling Basin (MDB), with much of the state (west of the Divide) recording above to very much above average rainfall. The MDB recorded its 9th wettest March on record (records since 1900), with a basin wide average of 81.3 mm. This is above the historical average of 38.6 mm, and the highest March rainfall since 1989 (86.8 mm). March also represents the second consecutive month with above average rainfall for the MDB.
The NSW statewide average rainfall was 63.0 mm, which is above the historical average1 of 49.0 mm. This is the highest March rainfall for NSW since 2001 (70.6 mm), but noticeably lower than the rainfall experienced in February 2010 (106.5 mm). Despite the above average statewide rainfall total, it should be noted that coastal NSW recorded about average rainfall during March.
A significant amount of the state's rainfall was recorded during the first ten days of March. A monsoonal low over inland Queensland brought rainfall to the border regions of NSW on the 1st and 2nd. On the 7th, the interaction of a central Australian low pressure system with an inland NSW trough, brought heavy rainfall, flooding and severe thunderstorms to the southern half of the state, in particular, the Riverina district. Mid month, moist onshore flow brought some rainfall to north and central coastal areas and adjacent ranges, whilst late in the month, a low pressure trough moving across the state brought rainfall to most districts.
Some sites had their highest total March rainfall on record.Following a warmer than average summer, autumn in NSW began with a return to average conditions. The statewide average statewide average mean temperature for March was 21.9°C, which equals the historical average1 of 21.9°C. This is a clear reflection of the close to average statewide maximum and minimum temperatures recorded during March.
Average to below average maximum temperatures were recorded in the north and northwest of the state, and the the far southern inland, associated with rainfall and enhanced cloud cover in these areas. Conversely, average to above average maximum temperatures were recorded over the remainder of the state. The statewide average maximum temperature for March was 28.4°C, which is close to the historical average of 28.6°C.
Minimum temperatures were average to above average across the state. The statewide average minimum temperature for March was 15.3°C, which is close to the historical average of 15.2°C.
Some sites had their coldest March day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.Floodwaters continue to travel down rivers in northwestern NSW, following torrential rainfall in Queensland during late February/early March. The Darling, Culgoa, Warrego, Bokhara and Paroo rivers are expected to continue flooding for several weeks.
Severe thunderstorms and flooding occurred on the 7th March in the Riverina, with reports of 5cm hail in Hay.
On the 23rd March, minor flooding occurred in the Byron Bay CBD. 22.8 mm of rain fell from 5am to 9am and a further 87.6 mm from 9am to 11.30am, making a total of 110.4 mm.

Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 April 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
