New South Wales in April 2010: Contrasting rainfall east and west of the Divide

• 13th warmest April on record for statewide average mean temperatures.
• 14th warmest April on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.

Rainfall

In a pattern similar to that of March, rainfall across NSW in April was distinctly contrasted east and west of the Divide. Below to very much below average rainfall was recorded east of the Divide (in particular, coastal NSW), whilst average to above average rainfall was recorded west of the Divide. However, despite western areas of the state recoding above average rainfall, the overall statewide statewide average rainfall was below average. The statewide average total was 31.5 mm, which is below the historical average¹of 46.7 mm. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded below average rainfall, with a basin-wide average of 30.1 mm, below the historical average of 38.1 mm. Below average rainfall has now been recorded in eight of the last ten Aprils for both NSW and the MDB.

Slow-moving high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea were a dominant synoptic feature during April, and contributed to the dry conditions along coastal NSW. Persistant northerly flow across the state, generated by these systems, suppressed the moist onshore flow that usually brings rain to coastal areas. A series of low pressure troughs contributed to the rainfall west of the Dividewest, with moist onshore flow bringing some rainfall to the far northern coastal areas.

Some sites had their lowest total April rainfall on record.

Temperature

Widespread heat was experienced across Australia during April, and NSW was no exception. Both day-time and night-time temperatures were above average throughout the state, particularly early and mid month. With above average maximum and minimum temperatures, the statewide average mean temperature for April was 15.5°C which is 0.9°C above the historical average of 14.6°C. This is the 13th warmest April on record for statewide average mean temperatures.

Under the influence of dominant high-pressure systems, bringing clear skies and warm, northerly winds; the statewide average maximum temperature was 25.0°C which is 0.9°C above the historical average of 24.1°C. This is the 18th warmest April on record for statewide average maximum temperatures.

A build up of heat across the state was reinforced by a lack of cool changes, blocked by persistant high-pressure systems in the Tasman. This, in combination with high humidity, resulted in above to very much above average night-time temperatures. The statewide average minimum temperature for April was 11.9°C which is 0.8°C above the historical average of 11.1°C. This is the 14th warmest April on record for statewide average minimum temperatures.

The above average temperatures experienced during April are consistent with the long-term warming trend in Australia and globally.
