New South Wales in May 2010: Wet end to autumn for southern regions

Rainfall
Rainfall during May was distributed north/south across the state; with average to below average rainfall in the north, and average to above average rainfall in the south. The southern coast was the only region to record very much above average rainfall, after a low pressure system brought significant rainfall to this area late in the month. This low pressure system, in combination with a complex low on the 26th, was responsible for much of the rainfall experienced in the southern half of the state during the month.
The statewide average rainfall for May was 34.5 mm which is below the historical average of 47.1 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded below average rainfall, with a basin-wide average of 29.5 mm which is below the historical average of 42.3 mm. Eight of the last ten Mays have recorded below average rainfall in NSW and the MDB.

Temperature
May day-time temperatures were above average throughout the state, particularly during the first half of the month. In contrast, night-time tempertures were below average, resulting in a close to average statewide mean temperature of 13.6°C which is 0.2°C above the historical average1 of 13.4°C.
Under the influence of high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea, which brought clear skies and warm northerly winds, above average day time temperatures were experienced across much of the state. The statewide average maximum temperature was 20.2°C which is 0.9°C above the historical average of 19.3°C. This is the the 10th consecutive May with above average maximum temperatures for NSW.
The dominant high pressure systems continued to influence temperatures at night, with the lack of cloud cover resulting in below average minimum temperatures for much of the state. The statewide average minimum temperature for May was 7.0°C which is 0.5°C below the historical average of 7.5°C. Eight of the last 10 Mays in NSW have recorded below average statewide minimum temperatures.

Other phenomena
A low pressure system on the 26th and an East Coast Low on the 30th - 31st brought significant rainfall to southern coastal areas. Weekly rainfall totals for the period 26 May - 1st June exceeded 300 mm in Cathcart (Mount Darragh) (308.4 mm) and Nimmitabel (Cottlesloe) (348.4 mm).

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 June 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
