New South Wales in June 2010: Late cold snap brings record cold nights

Rainfall
Much of the state recorded below average rainfall during June. The statewide average rainfall for June was 28.2 mm which is below the historical average1of 38.8 mm. This is the lowest June rainfall for NSW since 2002 (21.7 mm).
Coastal areas recorded average to above average rainfall, particularly the central and northern regions. This was primarily caused by an East Coast Low during the beginning of the month (4th/5th). West of the Divide, average to below average rainfall was recorded, with very much below average rainfall recorded in a small region in the far west. Dominant high pressure systems over the state during the month contributed to the below average rainfall experienced during June.
The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 22.1 mm which is below the historical average of 33.6 mm. This is the lowest June rainfall for the MDB since 1992 (19.2 mm)

Temperature
NSW experienced close to average temperatures during June, with a statewide average mean temperature of 10.6°C which is 0.3°C above the historical average of 10.3°C. However, under the influence of a dominant high pressure ridge, cold night-time conditions were experienced across much of NSW during the last few days of June; particularly in the Sydney, Central Coast and Hunter regions, where some locations recorded their coldest June night on record (see table).
Maximum temperatures were close to average, with much of the state recording maximum temperatures within one degree of the historical average. The statewide average maximum temperature for June was 16.4°C which is 0.3°C above the historical average of 16.1°C.
Despite the cold conditions at the end of the month, above average mininmums were recorded throughout much of NSW, particularly west of the Divide, where minimum temperatures were 1 – 2°C above average. The statewide average minimum temperature for June was 4.8°C which is 0.2°C above the historical average of 4.6°C.

Other phenomena
A low pressure system developed off the northern NSW coast on the 3rd. Moist easterly flow was directed onto the coast and adjacent Ranges, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms to this region. 24 hour rainfall totals to 9am on the 3rd included 174.2 at Alstonville (Tropical Fruit Research Station) and 170.8 mm at Ballina Airport.
A waterspout formed within a supercell thunderstorm and moved inland over Lennox Head on the morning of the 3rd. The thunderstorm and tornado embedded within it (rated between F1 and F2 on the Fujita scale) caused major damage due to the extremely strong winds, estimated at more than 150km/hr. The tornado moved north from Lennox Head to Byron Bay before moving offshore. 12 houses were destroyed and another 30 were damaged, and Lennox Head was declared a disaster zone the following day.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 July 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
