New South Wales in August 2010: Cold and wet end to winter

Rainfall
NSW experienced it wettest August in 7 years. Above average rainfall was recorded in the south of the state and along the tablelands and western slopes. Average rainfall was recorded elsewhere, with the exception of a small region in the central inland which recorded very much below average rainfall. The statewide average1 rainfall for August was 40.7 mm which is above the historical average of 37.8 mm.
Much of the rainfall experienced by the state during August resulted from complex low pressure systems developing and moving across south-eastern Australia, the Tasman Sea and the Bass Strait. These low pressure systems brought associated troughs and cold unstable air into the upper atmosphere. The most significant rainfall event occured on the 10th, when a low pressure system and associated trough over western NSW brought rain and thunderstorm activity across most of the state.
The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 51.5 mm which is above the historical average of 37.8 mm. This is the wettest August in 7 years for the MDB.

The majority of the state located west of the divide experienced very much below average maximum temperatures for August. Areas east of the divide experienced average to below average maximum temperatures and parts of central western NSW experienced their lowest maximum temperatures on record. The overall statewide average maximum temperature for NSW was 16.0°C which is 1.1°C below the historical average of 17.1 °C. This is the 9th lowest August average maximum temperature on record for NSW and the third August in 20 years to record below average day-time temperatures.
August minimum temperatures were average for NSW; with the exception of small areas in the northeast where above average minimum temperatures were recorded and small areas in central and western areas that recorded below average minimum temperatures. The overall statewide average minimum temperature was 3.4°C which is slightly below the historical average of 3.5°C.
The statewide average mean temperature for August was 10.3°C which is 0.6°C below the historical average of 10.9°C.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Wednesday 1 September 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation.
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
