Sydney in September 2010: Dry, warm start to spring

Rainfall
Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 42.2mm of rain during September 2010, which is below the historical average of 69.1mm. However, this is the wettest September since 2008 for Sydney, when 99.2mm of rainfall was recorded. The rain fell over ten days, with the most significant falls occurring on the 15th (21.0mm), associated with the passage of a complex low pressure system across the State. Rainfall from the 2nd to the 5th, associated with a deep low over South Australia, contributed 12.0mm to the month's total, while light falls on the10th/11th, 22nd/23rd and 30th amounted to just 9.2mm.
The below average rainfall experienced by Sydney is in stark contrast to that experienced across Australia, including inland regions of NSW. It was Australia's wettest September on record (see Special Climate Statement 22), associated with a moderate to strong La Niña event, now well established in the Pacific Ocean. The rainfall distribution across NSW during the month (wet in the west, drier in the east) is typical of that experienced during a La Niña event. Long-range models surveyed by the Bureau of Meteorology suggest the central Pacific will continue to exceed La Niña thresholds through spring, with the majority indicating the La Niña event will continue into at least early 2011. Sydney's water storage is currently at 57.8% of capacity. This is an increase of 0.3% from August levels, but 0.2% lower than September 2009. Current water storage information can be found on the new Bureau of Meteorology Water Storage Beta Release web site.
Temperature
The average maximum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill for September was 21.0°C, which is 1.0°C above the historical September average of 20.0°C. This is 2.1°C cooler than September 2009, which reached an average of 23.1°C.
The warmest temperature recorded in the Sydney area during the month was 29.8°C at Penrith Lakes AWS on the 27th, when warm northwesterly winds sent temperatures soaring across the Metropolitan - Sydney recorded 27.1°C on the same day. There were no days above 30°C, which, although average for September, is below the 3 days experienced last September during an El Niño event.
The average minimum temperature at Observatory Hill during September was 12.3°C, which is 1.2°C above the historical average of 11.1°C. This is now the 16th consecutive September with above average minimum temperatures at Sydney Observatory Hill. There were generally warmer than average minimum temperatures across the Metropolitan region, particularly on the 2nd and the 5th, associated with enhanced cloud cover.
Wind
West-northwesterly winds prevailed at Sydney Airport during September mornings, for 60% of the time. Afternoon winds were dominated by northeasterly and south-southeasterly seabreezes, for 60% of the time. Three strong wind days were reported at Sydney Airport (average 5), with a maximum wind gust of 91 km/hr on the 5th associated with a deep low pressure system over Bass Strait.
Other phenomena
Sunshine averaged 7.3 hours at Sydney Airport during September, below the historical average of 7.9 hours and the lowest average sunshine for September since 2004 (7.1 hours). Only one thunderstorm was reported at Sydney Airport on the 14th , which is about average for this time of year.

Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 October 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
