Rainfall
NSW experienced another wet month during November, under the continued influence of the moderate to strong La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean. This was the 5th consecutive month with above average rainfall for NSW - a response consistant with patterns typically expected during a La Niña event. The statewide average rainfall for the month was 102.6 mm which is well above the historical average1 of 44.9 mm, and almost triple the 36.3 mm recorded in November 2009. This was the 5th wettest November on record for NSW, and the wettest since 2000, when 110.5 mm was recorded.
The Murray Darling Basin also recorded above average rainfall, with a basin-wide average of 92.1 mm which is more than double the historical average of 40.2 mm. This was the 5th wettest November on record for the MDB, the wettest November since 2000 (102.7 mm) and wetter than November 2009 (34.4 mm).
Several significant rainfall events occurred during the month. At the start of the month, a low pressure trough brought widespread showers and thunderstorms to areas east of the Divide. Further rainfall was recorded in these areas around the 6th, associated with moist onshore flow from a high pressure system south of the Bight. On the 13th-17th, a slow-moving low pressure trough brought significant rainfall to much of the state. At the end of the month, much of NSW experienced heavy rainfall, under the influence of a low pressure trough and upper level trough that moved eastwards across the state from the 25th to the 30th.

Temperature
Day-time temperatures were cooler than average during November, which is consistent with the pattern expected during a La Niña event.. The statewide average maximum temperature for the month was 26.1°C, which is 1.7°C below the historical November average1 of 27.8°C. This is the coolest November since 1999 (24.8°C) and the 10th coolest November on record. Interestingly, November 1999 ranks as the coolest November on record (records since 1950) for NSW, and occurred during the La Niña event of 1998-2001. Below average maximum temperatures were recorded across NSW since August 2010, coinciding with the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean.
Statewide average night-time temperatures were above average during the month, at 14.0°C, which is 0.6°C above the historical average of 13.4°C. This is the 9th consecutive November with above average minimum temperatures for NSW.
The statewide average mean temperature for November was 20.0°C, which is 0.6°C below the historical average of 20.6°C. This is the coolest November since 2001 (19.9°C) for statewide average mean temperatures.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 December 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
