Rainfall
Sydney Observatory Hill recorded a total rainfall of 191.6mm during March, above the historical average of 128.9mm. This is the wettest March since 2000 (248.4mm) and the wettest single month since February 2010. The majority of the rain fell in a single event between the 20th and 22nd, following the driest start to a year since 1985, with further light falls associated with easterly flow between the 27th and 29th. In total, there were 18 rain days during the month, above the historical average of 13 rain days, of which five exceeded 10mm.
On the 20th, a complex low pressure system developed in a trough over the Gippsland region of Victoria and intensified over NSW, bringing very heavy rainfall to the Sydney region. This caused daily totals of 99.4mm at Sydney Observatory Hill, the wettest March day since 1984, with rainfall as high as 178mm at St Ives and 175mm in Turramurra in northern Sydney, including record breaking totals at Avalon, Collaroy and Mona Vale on the northern beaches. This system was associated with significant flash flooding in the Sydney Metropolitan region on the 20th, with road closures around the city including in the CBD and approximately 500 calls for assistance to the SES, particularly in the northern suburbs. Further rain followed on the 21st and 22nd, with daily falls of over 20mm at Sydney Observatory Hill.
Some sites had their highest total March rainfall on record.Temperature
Maximum temperatures at Sydney Observatory Hill averaged 26.0 °C during March, 1.3 °C above the historical average of 24.7 °C. This is the fourth consecutive warm month in Sydney, associated with the above average sea surface temperatures off the NSW coast. Temperatures were warmest on the first of the month when maximums reached 33.6 °C at Observatory Hill and 36.6 °C at Badgerys Creek in the west, with coolest conditions on the 28th. Four days above 30 °C were recorded in the city during March, well above the historical average of less than two days, with no days having maximum temperatures below 20 °C compared to the historical average of one day.
Minimum temperatures were also above average during March, averaging 19.2 °C compared to the historical average of 17.5 °C. This is the 7th warmest March on record for minimum temperatures, although slightly cooler than March 2010 (19.3 °C). Eleven nights exceeded 20 °C during the month, above the historical average of four warm nights, including six consecutive nights between the 9th and 14th. Mean temperatures were consequently well above average at 22.6 °C, 1.5 °C above the historical average of 21.1 °C. This was the equal 7th warmest March on record, and the warmest since 22.7 °C in March 2007.
Wind
Winds were predominantly E to SE during March, with 63% of 3pm winds from this direction, slightly above the normal frequency for March. Two strong wind days were reported at Sydney Airport, below the historical average of 4-5 strong wind days, with a maximum wind gust at the Airport of 67km/hr on the 14th. The strongest wind gust anywhere in the Metropolitan region during the month was 89km/hr at Camden Airport on the 30th associated with a severe thunderstorm.
Other phenomena
Sydney Airport recorded an average of 5.2 sunshine hours during March, below the historical average of 6.9 hours and the fourth lowest on record (since 1978). One thunderstorm was observed at Sydney Airport, below the historical average of 2 storms, with five storms reported throughout the Metropolitan region including a severe storm on the 30th. Humidity was close to average in Sydney during March.

Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 April 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
