Rainfall
Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 148.4 mm of rain during November, well above the historical average of 83.8 mm and the wettest November since 2007. The rain fell over sixteen rain days, above average for November. This included six days with more than 10 mm, the most since six days in November 2003. Particularly heavy falls were associated with a low pressure trough, which brought moist tropical air into the state between the 23rd and 26th. Rainfall reached 38.8 mm at Observatory Hill on the 23rd, while the wettest day in the metropolitan region was on the 26th, with several stations exceeding 50 mm including 71.2 mm at Berowra. This month was the wettest November on record in Berowra, Castle Hill and Randwick since the 1980s.
Temperature
Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 25.2 °C during November, 1.6 °C above the historical average, with above average temperatures throughout the city. Temperatures were particularly warm in the first half of the month, with five consecutive days above 28 °C at Observatory Hill between the 6th and 10th, the first time in November since 1966. Three days reached 30 °C during the month, above average for November (2 days), reaching 37.2 °C on the 14th. Temperatures cooled during a rainfall event towards the end of the month, with maximums of just 18.3 °C on the 23rd and 24th.
The average minimum temperature was 17.8 °C, 2.2 °C above the historical average and the 3rd warmest on record, following 2009 and 1914, and the second warmest on record at Sydney Airport. Nights were warmer than average throughout the city, particularly during the middle of the month, reaching 24.2 °C at Observatory Hill on the 10th. This was the equal 3rd warmest November day on record and the warmest since 24.8 °C on November 14 1967. Only four nights dipped below 15 °C during the month, reaching 13.8 °C on the 3rd, only the 8th time on record with no colder nights.
Wind
Winds were predominantly easterly during the month, with 77% of 3pm winds at Sydney Airport between SSE and NNE, normal for November. The strongest wind gusts reached 74 km/hr on the 14th and 76 km/hr on the 16th, with the highest wind gust anywhere in Sydney reaching 81 km/hr at Port Botany on the 14th.
Other phenomena
Sydney Airport recorded an average of 6.5 hours of sunshine during November, below the November average of 7.6 hours and the least sunshine for November since 2001. There were three thunderstorms reported at the Airport, close to the historical average of four storms, with five storms reported anywhere in the Metropolitan area during the month.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney - Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 December 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
