Sydney in December 2011: Coldest start to summer since 1960

  • 7th coldest December on record for maximum temperatures
  • Below average minimum temperatures
  • Fewest warm days since 1999
  • Close to average rainfall

Rainfall

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 78.4 mm of rainfall during December, close to the historical average of 77.9 mm. The rain fell over 17 rain days, above the December average (12 days) and the most since 2007. However, only five days exceeded 5 mm, close to the December average of 4 days. The wettest day was on the 8th, 23.6 mm, associated with a low pressure trough in the north, with further falls above 10 mm recorded on the 12th and 20th associated with thunderstorm activity.

Rainfall was higher in western and northern Sydney, much of which was well above the historical average, including the wettest December since 1989 at Berowra. The heavier falls were particularly associated with thunderstorms during the month, with rain as high as 77 mm at Turramurra in northern Sydney on the 12th, including 36 mm in 19 minutes at Mt Kuring-gai.

Temperature

The mean temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 19.9 °C, 1.4 °C below the historical average. This was the equal 9th coldest on record for Sydney, and the coolest since 19.5 °C in 1960. The cool temperatures were a result of both cold nights and very cold days during the month, particularly during the early part of December. This was associated with anomalously southerly winds during the month bringing cool conditions to NSW, in addition to well below average sunshine.

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of just 23.1 °C during December, 2.1 °C below the historical average. This is the coldest start to summer since 22.8 °C in December 1960 and the 7th coldest December on record. Maximum temperatures were more than 3 °C below average across most of the Sydney region, with the shorter-record stations in southern and western Sydney all experiencing their coldest December on record.

The cool temperatures were associated with a lack of warm days during the month, with only 8 days reaching 25 °C, for the first time since 1999, and a maximum temperature of just 26.8 °C on the 26th. In comparison, Sydney typically experiences 14 days above 25 °C and 3 days above 30 °C during December. Temperatures were particularly cool early in the month, with 8 consecutive days below 23 °C, the first such cold spell in summer since 19-26 December 1967. However, only two days were below 20 °C during the month, which is close to normal for December (1.5 days).

Minimum temperatures were also well below average across the city during December, with 16.7 °C at Sydney Observatory Hill, 0.8 °C below average and the coolest since 16.6 °C in 1995, while Bankstown had its coolest nights on record. Nights were also particularly cool at the start of the month, with 3 consecutive nights below 13 °C between the 5th and 7th, the first such spell since 3-6 December 1955 and only the 9th occurrence on record. Sydney also recorded its coldest December night since 1995, with 11.8 °C on the 5th. Nights warmed later in December, including nine consecutive nights above 18 °C between the 19th and 28th, resulting in weaker anomalies for December as a whole. However, only one night reached 20 °C, the lowest frequency since 1 day in 1986.

Some sites had their lowest December mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest December mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Wind

The prevailing wind direction at Sydney Airport was southerly, with winds between SW and SE for 71% of 9am observations and 61% at 3pm, well above the typical frequency of southerly winds during December. Sydney Airport reported only one strong wind day during the month, below the December average of 7 days, with the highest wind gust reaching 65 km/hr on the 4th.

Other phenomena

Sydney Airport recorded an average of 6.7 hours of sunshine during the month, below the December average of 7.9 hours and the lowest since 6.3 hours in 2003. Sydney Airport reported 2 thunderstorms during the month, below the December average of 3-4 storms, with six storms anywhere in the Metropolitan region, including reports of small hail on the 4th and 11th.

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).
This table is very wide; you may have to scroll sideways to see all the days, and you may need to set the paper to 'landscape' to print.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney - Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Tuesday 3 January 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
