Rainfall
Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 138.8 mm of rain during January, above the historical average of 101.2 mm and the wettest January since 2001. This is the first January since 2006 to have above average rainfall in Sydney. Rainfall was generally above average in the northeastern suburbs, breaking short-term records in Chatswood and Castle Hill, but closer to average in western and southern Sydney. The rain fell over thirteen days, average for January, of which five exceeded 10 mm - double the historical average and the most since 1995.
There were three significant rain events during the month. The first was associated with widespread thunderstorm activity, with 31.6 mm to 9am on the 9th at Observatory Hill, reaching 84 mm at Macquarie Park. Further rain fell as a low pressure trough crossed the coast during a period of easterly flow on the 15th and 16th, with daily falls reaching 29 mm at Observatory Hill on the 15th and up to 58.6 mm at Glenbrook on the 16th. Finally, a similar rain event caused falls of 29.6 mm at Observatory Hill on the 26th, reaching 66.4 mm at Glenorie.
Some sites had their highest total January rainfall on record.Temperature
The average maximum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill during January was 26.1 °C, slightly above the historical average of 25.9 °C. This is the 12th consecutive January with above average temperatures in Sydney, but the coolest since 24.8 °C was recorded in January 2000. There was only one day above 30 °C at Observatory Hill during the month, reaching 33.2 °C on the 30th, below the historical average of 3 hot days; however, two days reached 29 °C on the 4th and 10th. In western Sydney, most stations recorded below average temperatures, reflecting the shorter length of record, with particularly warm temperatures on the 3rd and 4th.
The average minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 19.6 °C during January, 0.9 °C above the historical average for the 12th consecutive warm year, with closer to average conditions at the shorter-record stations in western Sydney. The coolest period was between the 12th and 13th, with two consecutive nights below 15 °C at Observatory Hill, reaching just 13.9 °C on the 12th. This was the coldest January night at Observatory Hill since 13.8 °C was recorded on the 12th of January 1997, and the first time since 1992 with two consecutive cold nights in January.
The average daytime temperatures and warmer nights were associated with the above average rainfall and below average sunshine during the month.
Wind
The prevailing wind direction at Sydney Airport was E-NE during January, forming 70% of 3pm winds, close to normal for January. There were two strong wind days reported at the Airport, with maximum wind gusts in the Sydney region reaching 81 km/hr at Port Botany on the 4th and 83 km/hr at Kurnell on the 11th.
Other phenomena
Sydney Airport reported an average of 7.2 hours of bright sunshine during January, below the historical average of 7.6 hours. There were 3 thunderstorms reported at the Airport, average for January, with six storms anywhere in the Metropolitan region, including reports of hail on the 5th.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney - Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 February 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
